I kinda want to name TLC's Waterfalls as the true start of Neo Soul. Discuss Especially if you have heard the track recently. That being said if Prince started it, TLC set it off. Welcome to "the org", heartpeacesheart…

Um no. TLC were good but had nothing to do with neo soul really. That song is very pop.
Though organized noise deserve credit more than they get. [Edited 4/6/21 14:51pm]

Where's Terence Trent Darby and his big 1987 hit album Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby fit in with Neo-Soul (and his #1 hit Wishing Well that Prince even covered a few seconds of once or twice on the Lovesexy Tour?) My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I deleted a bunch of other non related thoughts but still, what's up with the topic, are the topics on auto regenerate or honestly, I'd love the job of deciding what topics to reintroduce on to the front page(s). maybe.

The 1993 "Plantation Lullabies" album (for me) was the first taste of retro sounding soul in the early 90's....The layered keyboards, programming, percussion, bass and spoken word on there reminded me a lot of 1970's Herbie Hancock and Gil Scott-Heron. Even heard a little bit of P's late 70's/early 80's influence in there too.

I'm going to be anal and say riot used a drum machine
Most neo soul did not And when I hear dorothy parker I do not hear neo soul as we know it Questlove just wanted to credit prince as he's a huge prince fan The links are tenuous Neo soul was just a dumb genre name I consider it to be the sound of brown sugar, baduizm, chico debarge, Lyndon David hall It was minimal, Rhodes based, and generally falsetto But Broadly you can see it as alternative rnb And that includes meshell, tomy toni tone, joi, adriana Evan's etc etc who all sound different, only thing they have in common is they were doing rnb and soul that didnt sound like regular 90s rnb After the early 00s though, that neo soul sound died and it just became alternative rnb in general, much more diverse [Edited 4/6/21 23:23pm] [Edited 4/6/21 23:23pm]

I'm thinking that "non-commercial" might be the term one would apply in substitution of the TTD quip, but brilliant and introspective would probably serve best. Plus they were brothers & sisters of the proto-neo-soulful stylists. TrivialPursuit said:

me shell had a few good songs, but she cant sing for shit, that was her problem. she sounds flat AF all the time. and her poetry/lyrics werent THAT interesting to me. if she just played bass, and was an instrumentalist, it would be fine.

It annoys me when people try to label his music other than Prince or Purple Music
Questluv tried to say at one time Prince was Hip Hop

Herbie Hanckock's "I thought it was you" is hailed as the birth of Daft Punk....
In all seriousness, I was in the UK at the time of all the Neo-Soul glory, and even as a huge (and I mean huge) Prince fan, not once did I think "well they all sound inspired by TBODP".
Great song though... | |
