March 1, 2021 - 3121! Don't u wanna come?

Today is 3.1.21, so let's talk about the goodness of 3121. I think it is one of his stronger albums in the recent years of its release.

41Qo9OMzY5L.jpg

"3121" - love the bottom-heavy opening track. It's like a vamp or jam. I love the message in it, too. Just a hang out, be yourself kinda thing.

"Lolita" - It's a cute bop.

"Te Amo Corazon" - bad first single choice, but I like the strings in it, and the song itself is beautiful. The video is gorgeous. Probably one of the more visually interesting videos in a very long time (aka non-performance).

"Black Sweat" - pass

"Incense and Candles" - I mean... it is what it is. Not horrible. It sorta picks up into a jam later on.

"Love" - I absolutely love the messaging in this song. The words really meant a lot to me when I heard it. It is so spot on, and the straight-forwardness of it reminds me of something like "Pearls B4 The Swine" or "F.U.N.K."

"Satisfied" - feels like an old school Prince ballad, finally.

"Fury" - a rocker, love it.

"The Word" - meehhh

"Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" - a nice song, I like Tamar's voice

"The Dance" - much better version than the other one.

"Get On The Boat" - a little preachy, but I like it when Prince delves into Latin flavored music.

________________________

Also - the perfume (I still have one or two unopened), the residency, the house! So much going on during this time.

The title track is an all time banger. Tbh I was shocked to hear it the first time. Prince was back.

I never got much into Get on the Boat or Satisfied but the rest? Come on. It's a great album, a classic of his latter day career for certain and it saw great success for a reason. Love this era.

I sorta wish "Get On The Boat" was in instrumental jam, a la "Strawberry Shortcake" or the extended parts of "The Glamorous Life" and "A Love Bizarre," etc. Maybe have another "3121!" chant in the background with a crowd or something.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Haha, yeah, actually it works great as an instrumental. I think P was still heavy in his preachy phase back then, IIRC, so no wonder he chose to go with those lyrics. It's hard for me to get into, but I love The Word. I think his religious stuff and political stuff is much easier to absorb when he's got a bit more humor and a bit less... I dunno, polarization? I guess he was always polarizing. I just didn't always feel like I was on the opposite pole as much or as often as that 1997-2008 period.

Excellent album, nice rebound from Musicology, which was too often dull

The Word is great silly lyrics aside but the keyboard line is pretty unique.

The songs on this album were Exhibit A on how Radio (Music Biz, in General) had blacklisted Prince.
The #1 Album was unable to get any airplay with plenty of commercial potential.

Same for me. I sat in my car and played it about 4 times reminiscing about Days Of Wild with Sonny and Michael..

.

Some great TV appearances at the time as well. Fury on SNL always gets lauded and I thought Te Amo Corazon at The Brits sounded great too.

This statement has always felt like nonsense to me. First of all, it references an address. It has nothing to do with a date. I guess it’s fun to do. If we must do this, then it makes the most sense to ape the way the date is written in the US, given it’s an American album. Any other way, like in the UK for example, is twice as irrelevant.

Plenty?

You think there's songs on here to rival other 2006 hits like sexy back, crazy, etc?
Black sweat made it into the pazz n jop poll. So it wasnt totally unrecognised

Biggest hit of 2006 was Bad Day? haha oh man what a terrible year.

https://www.billboard.com...-100-songs

I was probably listening to go-nowhere UK indie like The Rakes and The Long Blondes, go-nowhere Canadian indie like Wolf Parade and Islands, and the UK pop of Girls Aloud.... and I sure don't regret it looking at that list.

Great beat and cool vocal delivery = pros.
.
Iterating height pitch noise and weak lyrics = cons.
.
Mixed bag of a song overall.

Yeah I've never really fallen for that song. It sounds too much like the Neptunes and I don't actually like them or Pharrell for that matter.
