thank u for your replay. maybe we have a different periception of a beast cause i have Oberheim Matrix 6 and while it's not as the older OB series it is one of the last with the classic sound but vast oportunity when it comes to modulation.
I do believe there is an interview with Prince in either Musician magazine or Keyboard Player from around 1997/98/99 where, in his usual psycho babble, he talks about the machines dictating the sounds that musicians will end up using. Maybe he was right becuz that's where he ended up in a few years time.
I don't spend any amount of time looking at or keeping up with most technology and so I don't know anything about the Oberheim Matrix 6. Clearly it works for you.
it's a analog polysynth from 1986 |

I was lukewarm about Renato's playing until I heard his solo in Montreux 2009 "When U Were Mine".
Prince was ecstatic and I could appreciate his virtuosity moving forward. I've listened to it more than 10 times.
In May 2011 in LA, he played "The Love we Make"...still gives me chills. |

I was at that aftershow and it was definitely just him going crazy on the guitar. Life Matters |

The only way to be sure is to:
- Force Paisley Park under oath to release the whole unedited thing
- Or use a b00tleg audience recording
The former is hard to do.
The latter has been done. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry. |

The guitar solo sounds metal to my ears. Are there any out and out metal fans who disagree? The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

I actually am a piano and synth player. I've been one for about 30 years. I believe that both Renato and Mr. Hayes are stellar musicians. I've never heard either do anything bad on any live recording. But I don't believe for a second that one is lesser or more than the other. Prince had them both for specific reasons and/or tasks and I believe that is what matters.
ok so do you think Renato is a jazz pianist? cause thats how he wantd to present him.
what do you think about the solo i mentioned and what do u think about Netos choise of synth patches?
I agree with you, thebanishedone. Renato is not a great jazz player IMO, but a smooth Brazilian keyboard player with little to no edge. I think his 'hotel lounge' playing style was ill suited for Prince's band. His synth patches were often cheap sounding/grating. For me his patches and playing stuck out like a sore thumb on some songs during the ONA/Musicology era. I loved Prince's band during this era but always wished he would have replaced Renato with someone more edgy/funky.
(Disclaimer: of course Neto is technically a great keyboardist, it is just that his smooth style didn't fit Prince's edgier sound very well IMHO.) RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... |

Well then that would be Prince's fault then. Everything played on record and stage would be written or directed by Prince anyway.
Thinking about it, whoever said that Renato was a great jazz player anyway? I don't even know why this is a subject for discussion. |

Yeah overall I'd agree. There's more hard rock in there. However 1:37 and 3:29... have to be metal. The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you want Prince doing metal i suggest these
R U There (Mc Flash sessions)
the ending of Digital Garden
the ending of Family Name
Sister 1988 version
some of the 3rd Eye stuff is metal |
