I remember the first time I heard him play that on the ONA tour in London and I almost lost my mind. In fact, I did lose my mind. My gf at the time, who worked in the music business and was so jaded by it all cuz she'd seen every artist in the world (and also saw the LoveSexy show) had to hide behind me because Prince scared the hell out of her lol.

Yeah, the performance of Whole lotta love in Hamburg CCH was way more mindblowing & longer & psychadelicaderidera than on "Indigo nights"..so cool & loud [Edited 3/25/21 12:44pm]

I like the Rotterdam version he did. I got to witness the Alladin version in person .

"Indigo Nights" really needs a proper reissue. It's definitely a "niche" album, but there are some damn fine moments on it.

I'm listening to the Paris Le Bataclan aftershow and the London Hammersmith concert (the one I went to) and he first does Bambi and then Whole Lotta Love. I think he screwed up the words but quickly got it back. Both are de-vas-ta-ting.
He's doing some next level stuff with effects on the London performance of WLL.

I'm going to check out all these ones that people are mentioning Another one that is pretty great is the one at the Xenophobia Celebration.

Maybe that's because i was there but the June 25 version from Paisley Park was fabulous! "You can skate around the issue if you like,
But who's gonna get you high in the middle of the night?"

Renato is an incredible musician. Montreux Jazz is a highlight.
I think its very intriguing that the bassline of WLL is exactly the same as the song that precedes it...Rock Steady.

Renato is far from incredable. He knows a few pseudo jazz licks but when it comes to jazz Tommy Barbarela would smoke him. When it comes to synth solos his synth solos are amaterish, laughable and with the use of some of the worst effects i've ever heard. regarding Whola Lotta Love Indigo i have a last indigo aftershow boot and it was played during that gig.No overdubs.the other distorted sound is Renatos keyboard

How does a simple adoration thread on this website suddenly turn into diss thread?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yeah possibly. Naive me.

Well it was me opening that door so let me explain.Even though guitar is my main instrument,i first started playing piano and my love for keyboard instruments never ended. Did you guys listen to Renatos synth solos? what do you think about the one he did on ONA Vegas Dvd on 1+1+1=3? How about those terrible digital noise on The Rainbow Children song live? Renato is good at his pseudo jazz but jazz it ain't for sure. I've seen some people here diss Morris Hayes but check out Portugal 2010. You have Renato and Morris both sharing keyboard duties and Morris smoked Netos ass on synth that night. Keyboard and synth sounds improved when Cassie came onboard .but u know what i take 1 Renato over 500 Joshua Weltons. In 2015 the only keyboard player was Josh and keyboard abnd synth sounds sounded under rehearsed and lots of mistakes.u have 2 soundboards from 2015 and u can check how Josh handled keyboard duties.
p.s. Whola Lotta Love Indigo Nights is the best version when it comes to guitar playing,if he did vocals it would have been even better but still perfect the way it is.

I actually am a piano and synth player. I've been one for about 30 years. I believe that both Renato and Mr. Hayes are stellar musicians. I've never heard either do anything bad on any live recording. But I don't believe for a second that one is lesser or more than the other. Prince had them both for specific reasons and/or tasks and I believe that is what matters.

Well Put. | |

I guess it comes down to taste, as with so many things. For me personally some of renato's solo's are as enjoyable as prince's guitar solo's.

ok so do you think Renato is a jazz pianist? cause thats how he wantd to present him. what do you think about the solo i mentioned and what do u think about Netos choise of synth patches?

My understanding was that Renato came from a latin music background. I could be wrong but that's what I thought I read way back when. It's not the rule but generally, if he is a modern latin player then I am assuming there are some jazz chops. As for his synth patches, I do believe that Prince was the musical director for his own band and I'm sure Renato might (MIGHT) have been instructed to use those patches.
As for the solo, if you're talking about the brief one he plays around the 4 min mark and the 6:30 mark, that's from a Yamaha Motif 8. I have that exact same synth and it's a beast. In fact, 200% true story, I bought that thing because Prince used it at the ONA London shows. Even took a bank loan to get it. Shame I dont play it enough. I took it with me when I left the UK.
I hear NOTHING wrong with either solo or that patch. The thing about the performance of that song is that it's just one giant long jam. They take the bare bones of the song and just jam it out while going in and out of the actual structure of the song. It's not uncommon for that kind of thing to happen. Plus, and most importantly, Prince seems to be showing signs of approval.

thank u for your replay. maybe we have a different periception of a beast cause i have Oberheim Matrix 6 and while it's not as the older OB series it is one of the last with the classic sound but vast oportunity when it comes to modulation.

I do believe there is an interview with Prince in either Musician magazine or Keyboard Player from around 1997/98/99 where, in his usual psycho babble, he talks about the machines dictating the sounds that musicians will end up using. Maybe he was right becuz that's where he ended up in a few years time. I don't spend any amount of time looking at or keeping up with most technology and so I don't know anything about the Oberheim Matrix 6. Clearly it works for you.
