Why call it paisley park?

Does anyone know the history behind the name? Of course we have seen him wear paisley previously and often prior to the opening of pp, but is there any detail on how it came to be called this beyond a liking for the pattern?

Except the song doesn't at all go into why he named his studio complex that.

You'd be better off pointing to Roadhouse Garden as that paints the picture of what PP would become and certainly how it was envisioned. It's referring to a specific place that could or should exist - not something merely "in your heart."

now that would be cool.

inside at least, it should have had more paisley designs.

the outside is just so non descript. it looks like an amazon warehouse.

Same reason he called his clubs Glam Slam. He thought it sounded clever, and they were wearing a lot of Paisley at the time, and the style defined a mood.

I do not speak english as a first language.

Paisley is, amongst other meanings, a quirky type of motif on various fabrics used in clothing, etc.

If one were philosophical, one would see parallels with life, perhaps.

The song Paisley Park describes the park as a place with happy people with inner peace, i.e. a state of mind.

It also mentions it is in your heart.

The connection between that place and the graphical motif is not really made clear in the song.

Others have pointed out the Paisley Underground...It's a Psychedelic music thing, and that's what Prince & The Revolution were into the most @ that time when the name became a reality. "ATWIAD" was the 1st release on his new record label Paisley Park, which happened to have a song on the album with the same name. So, I'm thinking it was all just a part of the new scene he wanted to create...especially after The Time + Apollonia 6 disbanded. Just a new way of thinking, a new phase for the "community" he led.

By time the complex and studio was built and opened, what better name to call it than what his record label was already called? Yeah, he could've called it something more formal like PRN Studios. But, the label was already called Paisley Park, so why not? And listening back, "Lovesexy" (the 1st album recorded after it was built) is just about as Psychedelic as "ATWIAD". IMO. Notice that was the final Prince album with the original Paisley Park logo.

Prince was exploring the idea of a place to record and play, see also roadhouse garden that refers to the 24 tracks on a recording machine that was the norm at that time. He was experimenting a lot with reversing sounds, changing speeds and more. (see the end of Darling Nikki, the start of Baby I'm a Star, the guitar in Shortberry Strawcake, etc)

.

What does that have to with Paisley Park? Well... parts of the song are written symmetrically. i.e. the same notes going forward or backward. There's much more to it, but Paisley Park is also one of the only clear examples of backmasking, i.e. saying something forward that also is something meaningful backward. It is easiest to hear if you play the start of the Paisley Park 12inch mix backward. Just the "Paisley Park" at the start. I won't spoil the surprise for now.

.

I think he was so proud of having the idea of a park (as the text in the song goes) where colorful people will have fun, combined with the "deeper" meaning of the backward masking, that he chose it then and there for his label. (at first just a vanity stamp on his records and those of his associates)

.

This was also the time that the designs for his complex were started and the name stuck. He may have felt like changing it soon after (he changed things on a whim so many times), but for whatever reasons it never happened. I mean.. if you'd change it, what would you change it to that would work as well and had such extra meanings as well?

.

In the end, the name is what stuck with him the longest during his career, beaten only by the name Prince. (which may have been different if his argument with WB had lasted longer) But WB, Revolution, NPG... everything else changed and fell by the wayside. Paisley Park stuck.

.

I'm happy about it, it's from my favourite album and is a name that, to me, speaks of positive spirituality and joy. And it was a playground for him until his death, where it even became his home. It's a good name for it.

.

The first album with eventual "normal" Paisley Park album was, I think, Camille. The first one released was Madhouse 8.

.

The last one was much later than Lovesexy though, as the label never changed after that for Paisley Park releases. It was certainly still used for the 1993 releases that were some of the last before the label was closed.

.

Unless you mean the label for ATWIAD, but that was simply a WB label with some nice makeup. Back in those days, WB spent a lot of money on all things prince. 1999, Purple Rain, ATWIAD and Parade all have wonderful artwork on the labels. (and even Morris's colour of success and the Time's Ice Cream Castle)

.

It wasn't until 1987 that Prince actually had his own label proper. And they used one label for all the releases, hardly changed at all over the years it was active.
