Halftime at the Superbowl

Just like everyone else, I am hopeful that The Weekend will pull off a great performance tomorrow. I really do, just like his vibe. But, how could you ever compete with the GOAT's performance and it raining harder during Purple Rain?? I mean, when are we possibly going to have another complete musical artist rise to the surface like him? (lyrics, instruments, composing, mixing, dancing, and singing, able to do it all?) I am not sure the stars will ever align like that again. But, am cheering on my Chiefs, and hoping the halftime show will at least rank up there in the top 10!

Yeah.... if you look up 'overrated' in the dictionary, there's a picture of The Weeknd grinning arrogantly.

He's had a couple of good banging dance tunes, and those good ones have always involved strong collaboration with someone else.... otherwise, calling his material 'mediocre' is being polite, to me.

Arrogance is perhaps my least favourite characteristic in anyone.... it's close to, but clearly defined from confidence. This Weeknd fella is waaaaay too arrogant.... and nowhere near as good as he thinks he is....

My prediction? It'll be a half-assed, mostly tuneless halftime show, that everyone will faun over and forgive because he delivered it under the difficult circumstances of a pandemic.

By the way, this guy's also there in the encyclopaedia under 'dumbest stage name ever'.

lol lol

Why do they lip-synch @ a time like this?? He had an opportunity to shine.

Too much reliance on empty spectacle and 'dancing'

I turned it off.

Yes I have heard of Prince. And I believe I stipulated the subtle but important difference between arrogance and confidence. Prince was super confident - and might play at being arrogant - bit was never genuinely arrogant.

I was mostly joking wink I love the Weeknd, but do think he's a bit over-rated for his current position. Probably speaks to the lack of modern superstars than any fault of his own.

Ah, cool. Fair play! wink

I love I Feel It Coming, but that's mostly because of the Daft Punk input.... a couple of his others are okay.... the rest, meh.... and the breaking point for me was when he complained that he hadn't been nominated for any Grammys.... that's where his childish arrogance just shone like a beacon for me...

I wanted to love it. I actually did like it for about half of it. Then it got a little boring to me.

The production stuff was cool, but was The Weeknd himself all that great? I don't know. I only knew maybe 2 of the songs he did, and they kind of all sound the same. The sound itself didn't sound all that great as others have noted.

I like BANDS and watching musicians do they're thing. That's why Prince was so great.

The Prince performance had the best entrance I've ever seen with the lightning bolt striking and then blowing up the stage and the band emerging as the smoke faded. It's just a shame that his great concert was ruined by being in the middle of a boring ass football game. evillol

I'm not a Weeknd fan but he is one of the biggest names in music now and had one of the biggest albums last year that spurred off some successful singles yet didn't get a single nomination because he opted to invest his time and resources into his halftime performance as opposed to a live set at the Grammys.

You don't think he has the right to be angry about that?

Anyway, beyond the special effects, it was a pretty blah performance. Typical Weeknd fare but he gets a pass here since it was the Halftime Show where the spectacle is what it's all about.

Of course he doesn't have a right to be angry about it.... 'oh, they didn't nominate ME, so they must be corrupt!' .... the most childish of sour grapes.... and if already knew they were corrupt (who doesn't know that), then why does he even want one? And why wasn't he shouting about it beforehand, only when he had something to gain?

It's pathetic behaviour. Awards are awards.... Bob Dylan last year released one of the most critically acclaimed albums of his career... it was hard to find someone who didn't like it... he didn't get a single nomination.... where was his diatribe complaining that he wasn't nominated? Oh, nowhere, because he didn't give a fuck.... just like everyone else shouldn't give a fuck.

Are you trying to imply that the Grammys aren't corrupt? We don't need Weeknd's opinion to think that.

Your comparison between him and Bob Dylan is skewed. Dylan is a soon to be 80 year old man who's been in the music biz longer than The Weeknd has even been alive. He's a legendary figure in the world of music; him not getting a Grammy nomination isn't going to matter to him, he is above the award and has been for a long time. But for The Weeknd to have one of the biggest releases of 2020 and not get a nomination...? I'm not saying he should have won anything but to not even receive one, single nom? You see nothing egregious about that and him taking umbrage with such an obvious snub?

When you got the likes of Justin Bieber and his hollow, soulless kindergarten crap receiving recognition but not someone who outshined him commercially and critically then that should raise an eyebrow. This isn't the worst example of Grammy incompetence but it is the latest and ranks up there in the most petty of moves the NARAS has made. Yeah, most of the names of today are only concerned with their bag but Weeknd was screwed.

Best comment-

A football game was played at a Prince concert.

I didn't see this halftime show but based on the comments I've seen I'm feeling really bad for The Weeknd.

Time keeps on slipping into the future...

Given the circumstances, the wknd was ok.

It made me (and probably millions more) go back and watch some other shows that i haven't seen since they were live.

Bruno was fantastic!

Gaga!

Even KatyPurry was more fun lol

Worser was that fake Blues Brothers fiasco. What a waste of JB and ZZ!!!
