Growing up in Minnesota, the man was not exposed to hiphop...then when he was exposed to it, he didnt respect it... then when he tried to catch up, he didnt know how to successfully incorporate it into what he was already doing...im not sure why that easy concept is so hard to follow or understand? or why its even up for debate...Prince and his ex bandmates and co-workers have discussed this ad nauseum in various interviews and podcasts and books

-

Both you and Bart Vanhemelen are absolutely right.

I guess that Bart hit a nail there,

by saying that Prince wanted someone who would follow his directions.

If he went with the best rappers at the time, he would've come over as rediculous imho.

HE always wanted to be on top of any mmusical game.

And miscalculated that.

''Dead on it'' and after that local rappers with mediocre talent (under Prince's guide).

Even later on with Moonie Love, i felt it went mèh.

And Tevin Campbell... rappin', really ?

And to be honest, Carmen Electra rappin'... oh my.

imho of course.

theres no science to this.

lary blackmon didnt 'grow up' with rap either, but he did a better job of working with it on word up for example than prince did.

Word Up is not a hip/hop-rap record ...hes singing not rapping...and other members of Cameo were from Wyandanch(long island), New York...same neighborhood as hiphop pioneer Rakim

My point exactly
It's not a rap record
But it incorporates a rap influence in the lyrics, and title, without trying too hard to be down or sound like a hip hop song

Can’t believe no one’s mentioned Tony’s finest hour - the Goldnigga album.

Some nice stuff there and the original NPG be’s on fire ...

So for those who have heard my edits, thoughts? I went all out as much as possible with what I had in front of me. I'm not totally happy about "Willing and Able," but it is what it is. I'm more proud of stuff like "The Max," "Gett Off," and just taking him off the ends of "Sexy MF," "My Name is Prince," out of "The Flow," and even snipping his ass out of "The Sacrifice of Victor" and "Daddy Pop." If I could've taken him more out of "Push," I would've.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Goldnigga is a damn good album. Very underrated here. The production is particularly excellent. I would've loved to have heard Prince embrace a full album in that style and sound with the original NPG.

I was listening to the Cabaret Metro show from 93 the other day and it is crazy. The funkiest renditions of 'Come' and 'Gett Off' I've ever heard. What a band...

theyre def well done.

thanks for sharing.

though as i said, i dont mind tony with a line here and there like on get off, the max, love to the 9s. he does a good job there.

hes just doing backing vocals, and on gett off, i like the contrast between him, prince and rosie's voices. it works. taking them out makes me feel like somethings missing.

the only tracks i really dont like him on are on D&P - love for love, daddy pop, willing and able.

on the symbol album, as MNIP and sexy mf are basically raps anyway, it doesnt matter that much that hes on the end of each.

I always liked Tony M rap. What s wrong with it ? He s not worst than any american black rapper in the world ( I consider MC Solaar, Beastie Boyz and Eminem above the others).
WTF

MC Solaar was some French African guy, who rapped in French with some song called Le Nouveau Western or something like that. He probably did more but its hard to get into music in a language I did not understand or speak.

.

Tony M was an awful rapper then and now, his rapping is overly bombastic and comes on in the middle of many songs on D and P and Symbol like an unwelcome news bulletin or loud ass ad for a loan shark or an annoying electric goods store called Harvey Norman we have here.

.

Tony was loud and bombastic, yet his flow was weak and inauthentic sounding - he was talking loud and saying nothing. Prince was a genius in lots of things and making great music - but his choices for rapping were terrible, between Tony and Scrappa Doo (Or whatever the fuck that clown was called), some of the worst music ever was made.

I got plenty good loving for ya baby

i know who Solaar is and i disagree with you opinion of Tony M...the "WTF" was in response to the "black rapper" comment and the ridiculous notion that Eminem or the Beastie Boys(LOL) are somehow, someway better than them

That is exactly my problem with it - and with much of Prince's 90s catalog, in general. It sounds "of its time" - which is not something he concerned himself with prior to that.

You really think When Doves cry doesn't sound 80's? lol None of that stuff sounds "new" and that's ok.

No. I don't. And if it sounds 80s to you, I would contend that it's because of what came after (i.e. Prince's influence on the music world at large). Or because you don't have the frame of reference of having been around when it was released. (Which, if you put your real age on your profile, you weren't.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Let's face it, the only rappers prince should have worked with are more delicate rappers

Guys like PM dawn, digable planets or dream warriors, etc.

Most rappers sound too macho to mix well with the prince sound

PM Dawn on a Prince song...YES! They already did a great little cover of "1999" on Jesus Wept, as part of a larger medley.

RIP Prince Be.

theres nothing actually wrong with a guy like prince not liking or really 'getting' hip hop.

many artists of the soul and funk generation didnt.

its a shame he didnt 'own' that though.
