... to poop on (Triumph the comic dog came to mind with this title). razz neutral This was the last Prince album I bought. Listened to it once and knew it was over. Then came my deep dive into the old stuff. If he had lived on and took a break- forced because he wouldn't have done it willingly- maybe he'd have a return to form. As it is, he gave us enough to last a lifetime so it's all love.

I thought he took a break in 2011 and came back in form in 2014 with Art official age. That was his last great album and should've made a bigger impact than what it did.

How? Prince made zero promo, zero music video, zero tour, zero tv performance.
I never saw a package so light : bad quality cardboard, zero booklet.
Worst, he released another album the same day.
One can't hardly do worst as an exposition for an album.

He barely did any promotion for this album if my memory is correct.
I know he did the Saturday Night Live performance and did a LIVE Yahoo stream from Paisley Park.
I guess Prince being back on the Warner Bros label was enough promotion

I was going to mention SNL.

Thing is, around this point in the game, there was ZERO money to be made selling albums - CD's, Vinyl, Spotify, downloads - and Prince knew that. Spending money on packaging would have only made it worse and cut into those meager returns. There's still precious little money for the actual product for musicians. I read recently that one of the top played Spotify tracks last year earned the artist something in the area of 12.5 grand but I can't find the link.

Shit, even what money IS there is almost entirely singles driven, not by full records.

It's hardly a coincidence that Prince was giving away albums in newspapers, at concerts and hawking singles primarily on his website by this stage. Prince was a legacy artist at that point and was mainly making money from live shows and residencies (O2, Vegas). Having a "number one" album once the digital age took over acheived basically nothing more than publicity, which Prince really didn't need.

He never performed a song from AOA around the release date
He did perform Funknroll, but that was the Plectrum Electrum version, and it was months before he even announced he was back at WB.

The live Yahoo stream was a big fukc you to WB, he didn't perform one song from AOA.

Wrong. Art Offical Age was released on September 26, 2014. He performed Clouds on SNL on November 1, 2014.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Somebody got their shit together. I even like Lion of Judah, prolly because Eye am a Christian. Baby Mama a masterful one, Somewhere Here On Earth as well. Mr. Goodnight is standard loveman jive. Good album.

What are the criteria for rating an album (vs rating each song?)?

I've never cared about sales when it comes to Prince, because most of his albums really never sold much in contrast to other artists.

A good metric for a Prince album is: would you play it for others (with the expectation that they'd be into it?). Planet Earth overall fails in that capacity.

He did record it.A minute of it is circulating in very poor quality.I think he sent it to howard stern for feedback and howard broadcasted some of the studio version but kept running his mouth and talking during the song
