Planet Earth is a great album

3121 is among my top 5 prince albums and with its release I thought prince was on the right track again. But then Planet Earth was released a year later and I was really dissapointed.Aside from that awesome 3D album cover, not many of the songs were very memorable to me.So I pretty much ignored this album for years.
A few days ago I decided to try again and it has gotten better with time.
I love every track except "all the midnight's in the world".But even that one sounds better than it use to.I use to think it was been the worst song he ever recorded.
How catchy is "chelsea rodgers"?? What a great song
And I guess "Resolution" was the last time Prince collaborated with wendy and lisa in the studio? The lyrics are great.especially the lyrics about war
Oh and let's not forget "Somewhere on earth" Beautiful track in my opinion.
How do you all feel about the album?

It`s a pretty decent album with some very good tracks such as Somewhere here on earth that keep the overall listening experience enjoyable but overall there are definitely also some clunkers that keep the overall rating down. I would classify it in the lower half of his albums but I do enjoy it when I put it on from time to time.

It's a no for me.

I was buzzing to get it a couple of days early from my local newsagent before it was given out in The Mail On Sunday but was so underwhelmed on first listen.

.

I thought Musicology and 3121 were half decent and had their moments but this was so weak. Somewhere Here On Earth is probably the one plus IMO.

Good, maybe ok, not great. Great indeed was 3121, agree there. Both Musicology and Planet Earth connect with repeated listens, but not a lot of wonderful songs between them (Chelsea Rodgers is a highlight for sure I dig the One you Wanna See too, Musicology has title track, Cinnamon Girl and Reflection)

I think it's ok. However I do believe it's aging well. I bought the vinyl recently and some of the songs that I wasn't crazy about, like Mr Goodnight and Resolution sounded really good. Somewhere Here on Earth is gorgeous. Chelsea Rodgers is one of his most fun songs regardless of era. I always liked The One U Wanna C, which should've been a hit. The one I used to like but not so much anymore is the title track, and I will never be a fan of Guitar...all I hear is I Will Follow by U2.

I tend to think he should've leaned in to the Lotus flower project at the time since we know these sessions begat Planet Earth. I feel like the result would've been more cohesive and meaningful.

They should have released it as a country song. It would have been huge.

why thank you.

i'll rephrase then and say this board has made me question others' understanding of the term 'great album' razz

PE has one keeper, somewhere here on earth.

it has a handful of flat out duds.

the rest is pretty listenable.

chelsea rogers is another one in the same kind of mould as as get on the boat and everlasting now. fun but somehow kinda forgettable.

I like Planet Earth for a couple of great songs.

The rest is mediocre till bad.

Title track is awesome.

It's a decent album and definitely better than Musicology, 3121 and 20ten. There's som good songs I enjoy like The One U Wanna C, Somewhere Here on Earth, Future Baby Mama, All the Midnights in the World, Lion of Judah and Chelsea Rodgers.

I just think the last two songs don't sound or read lyrically well to me. But I like everything else.

i like the song "Planet Earth" and a few others, but Wendy n Lisa were never actually in the studio with Prince. They sent recordings back n forth.

This is probably the only time I bought a new Prince album, played it, and felt so dissapointed, and bored. Even "bad" Prince albums are not boring... This was just bland and boring. Hands down one of his worst albums.

Tbh I thought all his albums after TRC were all fairly boring.
Few standouts on each ofc and prince always can come up with some catchy melodies but still the albums as a whole were mostly just boring.

The album is decent enough, but not great. I absolutely love Somewhere Here on Earth. His performance of this song on Jay Leno years ago was incredible.

Seeing him do Somewhere Here on Earth live was incredible. I was kinda mild on the song until then. I really hope the Welcome 2 America tour gets the release treatment some day. I thought it was a great show reminiscent of the Parade and SOTT tours.

LOL, harsh but not untrue IMO. I only like The One U Wanna C (which I felt was really catchy and sounded like it could/should have been a hit) and Chelsea Rodgers. The rest is 'not for me'.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

From the same guy who made 1999, Purple Rain, SOTT, etc. . . . Planet Earth is not all that great.

This was NOT the album that Prince should have dropped after garnering such high praise for The Superbowl performance.

He seemed to be struggeling with what "good timing" should have been.

After the SB performance, he releases "Guitar" online and it isn't even the "Guitar" that ended up on the album.

Strange times, indeed.

A live performance mp3 would have been a big seller.

Or even a studio version of best of you.
