Why are so many women wearing purple at Biden’s inauguration today?

In a sea of red, white and blue, there’s a whole lot of purple.

Vice President Kamala Harris, former first lady Michelle Obama and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton donned purple, a color used traditionally as a symbol of bipartisanship — a mix of Republican red and Democratic blue — for Inauguration Day.

The color, Vanity Fair reported, also has historically symbolized nobility and was a color favored by the suffragettes, in addition to white.

The color was chosen by suffragettes in 1908, according to the National Park Service, to represent “the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity.”

Harris, 56, chose a black designer — Christopher John Rogers from Baton Rouge, Louisiana — for her Inauguration Day outfit. The designer previously dressed Beyoncé.
