Mc Flash a great display of Prince's 1988 guitar sound and style

Prince always get more loose on guitar live compared to studio work but on his project with Margie Cox Prince was cutting loose on guitar and most of the songs are heavy rock and heavy metal and Prince shines on guitar on every track .too bad it never got official release

Romeoblu

It's been a few years since I heard it. I probably have a cdr somewhere and the files on an old laptop.

I remember it was pretty good for the most part.

The highlights were Curious Blue, Bed of Roses and Girls Will be Girls.

I really didn't like Whistling Kenny. Prince's version can stay in the vault.

Hmmm, not sure I have either. I've heard about it, at most.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Unreleased album details (I'm sure this will jog memories for some - see, for example, Thunderball's The Work Volume 3):

Give it a listen, it's pretty good. One of the lost albums from the Paisley Vault, just like The Rebels... If you like songs like Elephants and Flowers, then this is for you.

Thanks for the link. So record companies weren't interested. That's a shame, because at that time, funk rock was becoming popular with acts like Lenny Kravitz, Living Colour and The Red Hot Chili Peppers breaking through. People who liked them may have liked MC Flash too.

Definitely. It's a great and underrated project. I heard WB wasn't feeling it. But I love that late 80's guitar sound. Mesa Boogie amps, BOSS pedals, etc.

He's definately playing a cloud!

Cool to hear off-the-cuff stuff!

Margie's voice is crazy powerful!

It's a shame they didn't have more time to concetrate on this potential powerhouse collab cool

I would love to hear the Prince versions of these songs; MC's voice never really clicked with me. It's cool to hear him making that transition from Lovesexy to Batman sound.

That intro where he lay down the synths pattern in the exact right moment, he pushes the buttons in the exact spot. His blistering guitar work right from the start.

I couldn't tell you what strings he was pulling. But somehow he has me immediately hooked. Am I a sucker for Prince, or is it just his studio magic that brings me to my knees? He just incorporates soundscapes that hits me in the right spot almost every time.

I listened to it last night while working on a quilt. I liked it.

It's pretty typical Prince fodder. I noticed a few elements here and there that were classic Prince, whether it was the way he'd segue to a bridge, the bridge itself, harmonies, all the signatures, subtle or otherwise are there.

Some of the lyrics are juvenile, but the production and musicality of it all is great. I kept wondering who else would be good singing these songs. Jill's okay, but she always sounds a little pitchy sometimes. "We Can Hang" and "Curious Blue" stick out as interesting tracks. "Girls Will Be Girls" is long, but the changes keep it engaging. "Brand New Boy" harkens to things like "Shake!".

Margie's voice is great, though, and she stands up to the bigger production without hesitation. Maybe her and Jill would've made for an interesting duo project, trading off vocals. Where Jill lacks, Margie picks up the slack. I even think Margie would've handled things like "All Day, All Night," "G-Spot," and other Jill songs really well.

Thebanishedone noted how it's sort of a segue from Lovesexy to Batman in sound. I can see that. Prince started to lean toward that hollow, reverby production around 1989. It was more evident on some of the stuff that Robin and Tevin recorded, as well as the plethora of unreleased remixes, etc. (It was also part of that period where everything was 150bpm, like he was on speed or something.) But the MC Flash project was still on this side of all that.

I wish "Whistling Kenny" was in the stuff out there, and maybe even a rockier version of "Standing At The Alter" (think about how "Love, Thy Will B Done' sounded w/ the NPG vs. original). All that, plus maybe 1 or 2 more tunes and it would've been a really fun project.

Thanks to the one who sent me the files.
