For better, or worse, do you hear/see Nirvana's influence? Not so much. You do in the "rock genre" but that has dwindled to an almost niche classification.

For better, or worse, do you hear/see Prince's influence? Yes. There are almost limitless examples of sonics, styles, sounds, that point back to Prince (and to his influences as well).

It's cool that Nirvana was #1 on this list. I never got into them - I was more of PJ fan. But Nirvana is now the Bob Dylan of this age. They will top every list just by default.

Depends on how you define "influential". Nirvana is credited as bringing grunge to the masses (which was actually a big deal and a death blow to hair metal).

OK. I love Nirvana, but...

They have leveled all stardom and the rock genre with an attitude of indifference and light cynicism;

the kind of outlet that many young people needed exactly at the time.

Personally i feel that that Kurt Cobain has managed to wear dresses during gigs, without being laughed at.

Probably without really realizing it, he has put the current gender issue on the map much earlier.

That's what i think.

Between grunge and the rise of hip-hop, for a while there it seemed like if you could sing or play your instrument you were bloody Wayne Newton.

I think as far as these music magazines go, Whitney Houston wasn't much of an influence. Or at least not immediately obvious. Immensly talented though.

I'm talking about with actual singers (musicians) in the real world and not what a magazine tells us. People who gig as wedding singers, lounge singers and club acts. I've come across more female singers that call out Whitney as their favourite than any Nirvana song by even white male musicians.

Many have done that within the last 35 years.

But, in the music realm, Prince did just that without always having #1 on the charts.

Unique Production, Alternate Distribution, Style Creation, ETC.

He really is the G.O.A.T.

It always trips me out when I read how "influential" Prince is. If he was so influential, the radio would be full of ass shaking funk instead a radio full of the dullest artists in music history.

That's the thing.

He is highly appreciated by most.

But his style is not easy to copy or to immitate.

That's one of the reasons why he remains unique.

Prince actually is a style on his own.

And Besides, FUNK (and Disco) is on the rise again.
