Lady Cab Driver never worked live? When Morris Hayes asked Prince to play Lady Cab Driver his response was that it never worked live.Hays responded that he have seen some club band killing it but Prince was still nah. So what do you think? Cause he didn't convince me,and my favourite is Lady Cab Driver 29 november 1982 live. A version that goes into extended part where Prince sings about sexy mamma and he goes into Santana like guitar solo .maybe one of the rare examples of him soling on it,but it's not my favourite just because of Prince playing guitar solo,it's because that version slays all the versioons i've heard so far.

That's one of my favorite Prince songs of all time. The tour demo on 1999 Deluxe that has it part of a medley is great. I've also heard a rehearsal of him playing it the same way he did in that demo. It would have been very hot played in concert that way. Andy is a four letter word.

i think i gotta agree with Prince here. going off the Nov 29, 1982 (Houston, 1999 SDE video) and Nov 30, 1982 (Detroit) versions; something sounds a little off. the live version changes the drum beat and adds a piano part which not present on the 1999 album. the live vocals didn’t sound as good as the album version, either. obviously that happens with most live music, but i think having different people sing the harmonies rather than just Prince multitracking his vocals is the reason for this.
basically, the album version of Lady Cab Driver is minimalism at its funkiest. changing the arrangement for the live version changed the song a bit too much for me. good read by Prince on this one [Edited 1/16/21 14:02pm]

fragglerock said: yeah don't worry about giving credit where you got this info because f#$* those guys right? Lmao, anyways. It never worked live because the vocals were always bad. The live arrangements during the 1999/PR tours were super decadent and lush which works against that song.

I really love the song so was ecstatic whenever I heard this and would have loved to have seen it live. Even a piano and microphone version would be cool. I think the quality of the song surpassed the fact live versions were perfect. I mean there are plenty of average versions of Kiss he performed live (and yes it was a hit he "had" to play) and yet he worked it up.

for the interview where Morris said the same thing you need to look up,cause i ain't gonna bother proving anything to you.And yes Morris Hayes did told me that.I spoke a few times with him about analog synths, and i aSked him why they never did Lady Cab Driver. He said he asked Prince to play it but Prince said it never worked live.Than Morris replied how he witness a band in some club killing it,and Prince was like yeah whatever. In the last 10 years i had an oportunitty to speak with Michael Bland,Levi Seacer jr ,Matt Fink,Miko Weaver,Jill Jones,Bobby Z ,Lisa Coleman,John Blackwell.i also was a stage crew on a funk festival 2019 and i got to know Greg Boyer,Mike Philly,Npg horns,Sheila Escovado. When i aprouched Philly and start talking how i like his playing with the NPG he told me this guy over there played with Prince, and i said :who ? and Mike responded Greg Boyer, and i said of course i know Greg he played with P Funk and Chuck Brown.when i start recalling stuff from Gregs biography his jaws dropped ,he was like how this europen white boy knows this much. So i don't know why it's hard to believe that i have, had contanct with Prince associates, many orgers do beside me. [Edited 1/17/21 1:05am]

The rendition he gave in Detroit during the 1999 tour is one of my favorite live songs, especially with those extra lyrics. I´m quite surprised to read that Prince thought this song wouldn´t work live. In my opinion it also depends a lot on the band and the sound he creates with his band. While I do think that the Detroit version sounded great, I can´t see any other band live up to that version, and besides, he probably wouldn´t have wanted to repeat that version. I like that medley version of it on SDE, too. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

"The tour demo on 1999 Deluxe that has it part of a medley is great. "
I believe that version along with the others in that melody was originally part of the "Purple Medley" that was Prince's(r.i.p.) quest to re-record his vast catalog. Therefore mislabeled. Those instruments played were ALL him. I know how he plays. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

Are you sure cause it sounds like rehearsal version played by band live

It has the same sound as that Purple Medley. I never heard the version the band played live. But that statement in itself says he played ALL the instruments on the 1999 Deluxe(whom remains my favorite deluxe packet so far) version. Also Prince(r.i.p.) was good at mimicking ANY lick the band played. Unless Prince(r.i.p.) comes back and tells me otherwise. That's what I believe. If he's talking about Purple Medley that was all recorded in the 90s 1994 or 1995?

It worked, it just wasn't always the same song. All the Critics Love You was a similar phenomenon.
