Posthumous Album

I propose that if there is one artist in the annuls of time that would have thought to leave a killer album behind, hidden away, the one album they are most proud of, to be discovered as one last hurrah and a reminder to the world of their greatness after passing, it would be Prince. Thoughts?

Wait...wasn't that album going to be credited to Mono Neon, and not Prince? So, it wouldn't even have been a Prince album. Am I mistaken?

You are correct, and it wouldn't fit what the OP is asking about anyway. Something like The Dawn (had he continued working on it after the late 90s) would qualify.

I wouldn't be surprised. Of course, what Prince was most proud of is far from a guarantee of quality.

from what i have read and heard It is a prince album . Mono has main vocal on Ruff Enuff though which is thought to be on Black is the new black but nothing really confirmed. Carnt believe no one is asking micheal howe about this in any interviews. It was his last known project

Again, therein lies the confusion. From what I've read, again it was mainly a Mono Neon project. I did read that "Free Urself" may have been considered for the album, which is a straight up P track. But again...from the info I have gathered, this thought that "Black is the New Black" is the last known Prince album is grossly exaggerated. While it does contain some of the last works he was involved in, it is an album that was to be credited to a different artist, and as such not a Prince album...

Do you have insider knowledge? Only say that because I haven’t heard that it was going to be credited to someone else. I only heard from a dr funk podcast about it but it sounded like prince was the main force behind it. But like any prince project in the early stages. Everything seemed a little up in the air! What his band member did say was that he knew of 8 tracks that had been recorded for it.

No inside knowledge at all. I'm just a lowly Facilities Director at a local hospital, with absoluetely NO connections to the Prince world other then simply being a fan. I just looked it up on princevault.com and Google. And what those sites say is what I simply reported out. Actually, they report that not only is "Black is the New Black" a Mono Neon album, it's mainly an instrumental album to boot. At least, that's what I read somewhere. Now, isn't that a nicer way to answer that question Bart?!?!?

He lost the art of making good / interesting albums.
Howe might be able to make a good album though, from unreleased material.

It's your opinion of course but many would say the likes of TRC, LotusFlower, AOA and HNR2 are 'good / interesting' latter day albums

He used to say that he had some full albums in the vault which is why I don't understand why they haven't released anything other than outtakes from previously released albums. I love them and want them also but why aren't they releasing any of the full unreleased albums? One that I remember him mentioning was the follow-up to "1999". That's what I want and more albums from the 1980s. As far as what he might have been working on right before he died, I have absolutely no interest in that whatsoever. I became very bored with those last few albums to the point that I didn't even buy them.

I am hoping for a collection of unreleased Van Halen songs in the future, but I'm not holding my breath. That band only had ONE non-album B-side in their entire career, so odds are they released everything they recorded (or at least the best stuff).

I'd love for an unreleased Beatles album, but they scraped the bottom of the barrel releasing Anthology, and the two "new" songs weren't really top-shelf material.

The posthumous MJ material was grossly mismanaged (and partially fake). So who knows.

I'd love for a new Tom Petty album.

I think anything that comes out posthumously from ANY artist would be a compilation, and not a finished, unreleased ALBUM.

Well, Bowie's Black Star comes to mind...although it was released while he was dying.

The Rainbow Children 2 from 2004 is an unreleased album we definitely haven't heard yet.

I mean he may have kept one back. The one he thought was best. To be discovered after his passing. Perhaps The Dawn? Yes I agree with what someone else said in that what P thought was his best stuff may not be what other people think. However, I think he's capable of having thought about creating an album to be released only after his passing. I guess yes Bowie did that with Black Star.

A friend of mine (I know... take it FWIW), who would most definately know in this particular case, considers it to be a Prince album. At least, it was recorded to be. That said, Prince could have at some point decided to put MN on the sleeve.

I do know it is completed and ready.

I watched a video of him walking through 5150 studios, and there was a rack of recordings (similar to Prince's Vault) that Eddie said needed to be digitized. IIRC correctly, he had digitized them all once but the computer/HD failed and he never went back and did it himself.

I think Wolfgang will handle that with care. But I feel that what's on those reels is musical/instrumental stuff. I don't think there are songs with lyrics, etc.

Will it actually be something special or just another day at the studio?

I'd be more interested in a set of recordings from the final tour.
