HNR Phase 1 is Contagious! In a hooked-kind-of-way.
Sure I was digging on this when it first came out but I didn't like every track.
Then after Prince passed away I don't think I listened to it much, if at all.
But about 2 weeks ago I put it on and I'm hooked!
I actually dig each and every track now.
Need to put it on more and more.
It's so fun and bouncy for the most part.
Can't get enough of it.
Y'all?
----------- Now for the naysayers I made it real easy to say how much you hate it: "It's contagious like (insert sickness!)

It´s the only Prince album I haven´t bought yet, and there´s a reason for that. I find it unlistenable, just like I find some of the Josh Welton productions on AOA unlistenable, but at least AOA contains a couple of songs I can get into. There are couple of songs on Phase 1 that I like, such as June or 1000 Hugs and Kisses (even though I much prefer the old version) but there are really only two or three songs on it that I like, and I never had that with any other Prince album. I like Phase 2 though, it´s not really a cohesive album per se but contains a lot of good songs, and one of his last masterpieces (Revelation). " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?" | |

My 1 big problem with this album is that it starts with a song that doesn't have Prince on lead vocals. That feels weird as an opening track. Part of the album is a slightly cringy, but not too much and the good songs are really very cool and even the mediocre or silly ones are indeed contagious. I think of it as a kind of really nice 'different sound' EP release, with the outtakes and bsides thrown in directly at release, instead of waiting to release them 20 years down the line with the SDE same feeling for PLECTRUM ELECTRUM. Amazing EP, comes with half a dozen slightly botched bsides/session tracks. | |

Hardrocklover, X's Face, 1000 Hugs & Kisses and June are definite highlights and very strong songs. I'm also fond of Shut This Down and Fall in Love 2nite. Overall, it's a fun, uptempo album that plays like a mix-tape and is unlike anything else in Prince's catalogue. | |

I felt this way at first also.
But now I just dig it to begin the party! | |

Agreed. Though, I do miss Zooey on "Fallinlove2nite". That episode of New Girl warms my heart. "New Power slide...." | |

Yes. That is the "hit" version, or at least the version most people are familiar with.
But in the context of this album, her voice is kind of "earthy;" not as polished as the rest of the album.

For transfer to an mp3 device, i had to split the record from "Million $ Show" to the end of "Fallinlove2nite" and then the beginning of "The Xs Face" to "June". Fantastic results in the continuing -Prince Shuffle-. "Whatever skin we're in

If its contagious, I hope I never get it. Kind of album that would be better if someone else sung it. In another decade these would be songs given to other artists. Totally cringe to hear him sing them Or they're just songs he could write in his sleep or didnt put much effort into, even if they are catchy. I mean most prince songs are catchy, so that's not thaaaaat impressive. | |

It's a virus I don't want to catch. I can't remember one song on it, other than the one from New Girl. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. | |

I am one of those who prefer this one over phase 2.Phase 1 has a lot more going for it once you make it past the first 3 songs which aren't really that bad. Fall in love 2nite A thousand hugs and kisses remake The ex's face Mr nelson This could be us remix June ALL great songs | |

I’ve always liked this one. I expected to hate it after hearing people dumping on it on here when it came out. Im still surprised how much I enjoy it. The 2nd half especially is really good. June is brilliant. | |

Thank God for being able to hear it on the internet first because I would have been furious if I had spent my hard earned money on that foolishness. Andy is a four letter word. | |

I've tried to listen to both of the HNR albums and I can't get into either of them. The same with "Art Official Age" and "Plectrumelectrum".
I'll spin them again in five years and see if my opinion has changed. | |

Had a mixed feeling about this one at first release and still do. But every once in a while I'll let the whole thing play through and I do find it pretty enjoyable. The songs aren't too long and they blend well together (although every transition is pretty much the same). . I believe AOA captured the Joshua-Prince collaboration the best. This Could B Us remix is a highlight for me, same w/ June & 1000 X & O's. | |

Only good song is June. Fall in love is nice and fun but just derivative at the same time. | |

HNR1 is boring and Plectrum electrum is even worse. I'm glad Prince released HNR2 which is a much better album. Welcome 2 The Dawn | |

I'm not going to lie and say that HNR1 is anywhere in my Top 5 P albums of the 21st Century, even though "Art Official Age" definitely is. But if nothing else, it did show that Prince was capable of making music that was current and could've been on mainstream radio if given the opportunity to be. Alot of folks said constantly that they wanted him to change his sound and try new mainstream type things, and so he did. Still wasn't enough for some, so of course he released Phase Two right after to shut some folks up about the change. Still wasn't enough for some. So, I could see why he may have been depressed. Not only because of his own new music not being played or accepted, but the state of music in general. IMHO. The lack of promotion really had more to do with it than anything though.
"Shut This Down", "1000 Xs and Os" (which actually did get played a good amount of times on radio, should've been bigger though) & "June" would be my favorites from this LP. Also, if P would've had Jay Z feature on "Shut This Down", it definitely would've gotten some airplay. I'll never understand why something like that didn't happen, being originally only on TIDAL. Hell, he could've got Kendrick to jump on it as well. That would've did it if he wanted a "hit". But at the end of the day, I don't believe he cared about "hits" like that anymore...because he knew that would've been the easiest way to get one. [Edited 1/13/21 6:19am] Exiles of the Nation

its another of his turn your brain off projects as he got older there seemed to be more and more of these but yeah it is enjoyable it has a lot of catchy stuff it shows he could still do mainstream pop, but i mean, idk if i want to hear that from him at that stage in his life/career, but more than that, it was a shame he was doing it in a way that always sounded a bit like an imitation of mainstream pop at the time, rather than anything that special at least madonna works with better collaborators when shes trying to sound current but i dont hate josh welton, he did a good job on AOA | |

HNR Phase 1 . . . I do enjoy the album, but in Prince's canon it's definitely among the bottom-most albums (it's down there with Newpower Soul and Planet Earth). | |

TBH, I’ve always been a fan of it. I really like all four of the ‘14-‘15 era albums. Maybe it’s got something to do with being closer to the age demographic (28 at the time of release) he was presumingly trying to appeal to with this one. | |

For me, Art Official Age is so close to the definition of masterpiece.
The best album since The Rainbow Children. | |

Although I like both HNR albums, and 2 have some of the best tracks, I acutally prefer 1. Its more adventurous. . | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
HNR Phase 2 is probably the warmest sounding album P ever did, late Dylan or Van Morrison sat by the fire warm. The Rainbow Children may be close to it but the God on barbiturates narrative and overly loud bottom end? perhaps sounds more boomy than warm.
