Old Lyrics as New Songs

Prince is amazing at taking fragments of older lyrics and making entire new songs out of them. A couple that have connected for me recently:

"tame your little red love machine..."

"I will buy you diamonds and pearls / only if you're good girl"

Are there other connections that jump out at you?

I wonder to what extent he consciously took these lyrics or if they just happened to be the same and he later realized the connection.

The phrase "...it´s just around the corner..." is used in Still Would Stand All Time and in The Sacrifice of Victor.

-

The Dance Electric is mentioned during one of the Purple Rain show´s intermissions.

-

The number 17 is mentioned in Mountains and Partyman, and of course in 17 Days.

-

The lyric about swimming in the pool of his girlfriend´s father is part of the lyrics to Another Lonely Christmas and the ad-libbed lyrics of a Purple Rain rehearsal, also known as Gotta Shake This Feeling.

-

Taxis as a safe place or a vehicle that take you to a safe place are mentioned in Lady Cab Driver, Annie Christian, Joint 2 Joint and at least one more song that I can´t remember off the top of my head.

-

Obviously, the color purple is mentioned in many of his songs, from the late 70s to the mid 2000s.

-

And his hair deserves an honorable mention, too. It´s mentioned in several songs.

Wow, those are all great ones I'd missed. Also notable is that "purple" as a keyword in the 80s and "gold" in the 90s later figure in the fight song "Purple and Gold."

Oh, yes, you´re right, that´s what I actually wanted to list as an example but for some reason my brain got the song God (vocal) performance in Syracuse and the intermission mixed up.

Thanks for pointing that out.

One big one is "Wall Of Berlin". It was first mentioned at the very end of the song 3121 and then was its own song on LotusFlow3r.

Yes, I know, hence why I messed up my comments above. I was confused.

Just like Prince during that part of the show that you mentioned. ("I´m so....confused.")

Nah, I´m just getting old. lol
