What does being born at the same time as Prince have to do with anything?

Prince is a baby boomber. It's fair to assume that the majority of his fan base were Gen Xers like myself, born after 1962. It was a very unique position people like him, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Bruce Springsteen were in - being born in one generation and widely appealing to the next. We feel like they're our people, but yet they're more our parent's generation.

I never bought 1999 on 8-track, BUT ... my aunt had an 8-track recorder on her stereo. I recorded the first 6 or 7 songs of her album onto an older 8-track tape. Now, for anyone who knows about 8-tracks, they have a metal piece that triggers the head to jump down to the next layer of tracking on the tape. I think they were called Programs. Program 1, Program 2, etc. But, if you recorded over that metal piece, there was an obvious drop in sound for a second or so. So for a few years, I was used to a drop in "Little Red Corvette" and "Let's Pretend We're Married" and a couple others (I forget where.) I also never listened to anything past "Free." An 8-track wouldn't hold all those songs, maybe THREE, but not one.

When I finally got the whole album, it was weird to hear those songs w/o that drop in sound. My body and mind expected it and braced for it, yet it never happened. Weird aural habit to break. It was also a learning curve to get into things like "Automatic," "Lady Cab Driver," et al. Took me longer to appreciate "Something In The Water."

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Lucky you.

Never know what you're going to find. biggrin

I am way too orderly and organized, which somehow is pretty sad. wink

I can no longer encounter surprises in my own home...

I need to become sloppy and disorganised. Hell yeah!

Maybe I should start drinking. wink))

Side one was -

-

1 Bob George

2 Cindy C

3 Dead On It

4 When 2 R In Love

-

Side 2 -

-

5 Superfunkycalifragisexy

6 Le Grind

7 Rock Hard In A funky Place

8 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton

And up till this day since 1994, when I purschased the official release on CD,

I still think of the next song as I know it from back then.

Remains a bit weird too. smile
