Something has bugged me for years with "Eye Hate U"

Ok, so apparently this was a song aimed straight at Carmen Electra. However, during the Gold release he was in a serious relationship with Mayte, didn't she bother that he was singing in detail about a ex-girlfriend? And in 1995 he did that AMA performance with the medley and this song was included, probably rehearsed with all the dancers alot. And one of the dancers was Carmen Electra!!

Didn't she know the lyrical context of the song and why on earth would she just go along and perform with that in mind?

Ohh come on, this is Prince we're talking about. You are always a newbie in specific area of his catalogue. Mine happened to be Gold Experience and Graffiti Bridge. I rarely listen to those albums. Right now I'm deep into his 1989-1990 era (excluding GB)

I appreciate where you're coming from, your post just sounded a bit naive so I immediately thought you must be new to Prince.

So you're asking if Mayte gave a shit that Prince was singing about an ex? Gosh, I hope other musicians don't do that! The tragedy!

How does she, or anyone, have any room to complain about him singing about his past relationships? Is he just supposed to delete half his catalog and not sing things like "Strange Relationship," "The Beautiful Ones," "She's Always In My Hair," etc? Was Sheila upset about "The Beautiful Ones" or "Adore" or "Strange Relationship," all about Susannah or whoever? Did she protest if Prince pulled out "Wonderful Ass" since it was about Vanity?

Mayte was also employed by Prince. Prince was the boss, and wasn't anyone going to tell him what to play and what not to play. He didn't get that far and become who he was by weighing the opinions of his girlfriends and ex-girlfriends.

It's a silly question.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

We'll never truly know what conversations did, or didn't go on between Prince and Mayte, unless she specifically asked him not to play it then I guess it was fair game for P.

I think once he'd written a song and it had become part of his ouvre, then I guess he dissassociated it from himself and it became just a song to perform.

This is only my thoughts on the subject of course.

I mean.....yeah. I don't know if he was being cruel or honestly couldn't get enough from women and sex. Me personally find it extremely sexy, a high libido. But some might have took it personal.

One could spend several lifetimes trying to understand Prince and his many, many, many, many over-lapping relationships. I don't recommend it. wall

Don't know. Harem, hedonism. I love that period 1991-1992 Act I Tour. Skin, women, just sexy. And he was looking really good, sporting that short hair and the Ray Ban Locs. The Sexy M.F. performance, I just love that shit. Over confident Prince could be lame, but when it worked, it just spoke to me. Not too sleazy like some rockstars, just sexy.

I get what you're saying, and I agree, when over confident and over done, Prince could be lame at times, but no doubt the guy was as sexy as they come. biggrin

Agree with you and looby. IMO, one of P's amazing talents was to perform right on the line between absolutely, over-the-top fabulous...and too much. He was a master of riding multiple lines like that. One example would be the line between best-ever camp and devolving into silliness. He was so good at riding the lines just right.

He had enough guts or "don't care" in him to do that as an imperfect human, which means that sometimes people will roll their eyes when they see a person as missing the mark and falling over to the wrong side of the line.

I don't think we'd have some of Prince's great moments without what some people find to be eye-roll moments.

------------------

As far as the relationship juggling goes, I've got a presumptuous broken-record opinion on that.

He got hurt a lot, and others got hurt a lot.

He may well have been better off if he could have reached for something more polyamory, at least as polyamory is often defined these days: full disclosure and freedom for all to engage other partners, both male and female. There are people who have the guts to reach for something more polyamory and less harem. Or so I read. : )

If the stories out there are anywhere close to true, Nona Gaye went through a lot at that time. sad

On another subject, I'd think anyone getting involved with an artist should be ready to deal with the existing art having inspirations...of many different sorts.

On still another subject, have sometimes wondered how much the music/art of Prince and some others is fueled/shaped by (requited) infatuation. Would P's music be much different if he wasn't regularly pursuing new relationships?
