Theory: P wrote ‘How Come’ to JB’s ‘Please, Please, Please’ Let me tell you why I think this Imagine Prince late at night, at the piano, jamming out to ‘Please, Please, Please’ after a heartbreak. Eventually he starts playing around and the lyrics come in his head “I keep your picture beside my bed....” Now, he ‘rearranges’ (pun intended) the chords. Now listen to the alternate take of ‘How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore’ on the 1999 SDE set released a year ago.. The beginning is a similar enough patter to the piano pattern in Please Please Please Now listen to the performance Prince did this song with Alicia Keys... i’m sure he did this in other performances but I’m too lazy to listen to every single performance we have of How Come to find out.... but near the end he references James Brown’s song.. “please please don’t go...” Now maybe I’m wrong. But i’m pretty sure either it was a conscious decision to be inspired by JB’s song, or he did it subconsciously and later realized it... Both classic songs. |

Yeah it would lol But knowing how Prince could take the energy of something, flip it, rearrange it a little here and there and just make it his own thing, I’m pretty positive in my theory. Only way we could ever know for sure is if he recorded his entire process; playing Please, Please, Please, and step by step, creating How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore |

Beside the fact that Prince did incorporate Please Please Please into How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore live 2010-2012 period and similar shuffle kind of rhythm these two jams share nothing else in common. | |

thats not what I'm saying, i'm saying Prince took the energy he was feeling off of "Please, Please, Please" and then created something new. That's a good way to get into a creative mode, at least for me. I'm sure Prince has had these scenarios also.. |
