Crystal Ball 1998 reissue is on Sony's agenda.

https://www.schkopi.com/i...christmas/

"Yes, Sony is planning to reissue the 1998 " Crystal Ball " in the near future. However, I am not sufficiently aware of their outing schedule to be able to give you an exact date. I know they are very keen to bring this album to the market because they are fully aware of the potential of it."

From the most recent interview with Michael Howe.

Would love to get this on vinyl

If it ain't remastered, I ain't into it. These Sony releases are stuff being released on vinyl for the sake of it existing, and not adding anything to the original project. I've skipped all the purple vinyl kitschy stuff. For me, it's a gimmick and I've no time for it. Or money. SOTT did me in for the year with releases, and it seems like Sony took that lead and kept their schedule relatively quiet.

But hey, new year, new money grabs.

It was a half ass release in 98
Unless they revamp it, it still will be
This is why the 86 era tracks were not on the sott SDE
So they could remain on the re release of this shitty compilation

Well, hopefully it's not brickwalled or full of shitty transitions and cut-off song endings this time

Well that gives us something to look forward to in 2021. That's a very interesting interview.

Same here -- if it ain't remastered, I ain't into it.

But I don't begrudge them for re-releaseing some of these out-of-print CDs in their original forms. Some people don't have them, and they can be expense to purchase in the used marketplace.

Somebody said recently the tracks were sequenced beautifully, seamlessly on the album?!

But I don't see how songs like good love and crucial belong on the same set as those write-them-in-your sleep remixes.

Yeah, I should've added that. I don't mind that they do it, although it still feels like a crash grab. But if I'm going to put some money down, I want something worth it beyond a gimmick. The out of print stuff is good to have back in print.

That is not confirmed at all iirc.

Michael Howe just mentioned it briefly in a (recorded November 13, 2020) interview for the french Schkopi site. ANf that interview was released last (on December 25, 2020).

He also said that some more recent recroded material of Prince has the chance of being release.

Nothing so far, nearly two months later.

We already knew Sony was going to re release CB at some point.
But if they really want it, why are they waiting so long?
CB was the obvious companion to the SOTT SDE.
.
This interview of How is ludicrous, he says nothing during the whole thing.
T
His NDA clause is ludicrous, as if anybody cared. It s a real matter of life and dearh to know if they are going to re release CB or the Black album.
.
They are nice at Schkopi, but they should have asked him questions he could answer, such as why they are not printing lyrics in the booklets?

"SC: We know you can't tell us what to expect in terms of future releases for the year 2021, since you've signed a confidentiality clause, however do you think fans will be surprised, touched, moved or excited? by these upcoming publications?

MH : Yes, I believe so. There are two projects that we are currently working on, and I think that each in their own way, they will be pleasant surprises, capable of satisfying both the most ardent fans and the other, more novice listeners, who are in full discovery. of Prince and his music."

Great interview. I'm excited that there will be 2 projects released this year.

I can't imagine what potential they see in it other than to right the wrongs of the initial botched release; namely the too loud mastering and intentionally bad editing.

.

A straight up reissue for posterity is really all that's needed. Better to continue putting their energies towards the specific album/era remasters rather than waste effort on bringing this confused Frankenstein release back to the fore.

Exactly all this.

-

But I believe the pandemic is a serious downer in that regard.

Yes the interview is a serious ''mèh'' to the highest degree.

Ooooh yes, it might be a serious matter of life and death in what he is allowed to say...

So a big phat yawn !

-

And I wonder why too there are no lyrics, or a website where we could have them.

Propably it was too expensive to have a copywriter go for all the 2's and 4's and R's and U's.

lol

I'm trying to understand the limits or parameters on what Howe can and can't talk about. First he says he can't even acknowledge if they found other songs from the Dawn project, not even in a general, ambigous way. But then he has no problem generally describing material they found from Prince's collaborations with Miles. That seems inconsistent to me, but perhaps I'm missing something.

Instead of pooring all the energy in the 'other fans'

They should focus on us, the ardent fools! Who are ready to pay for several releases a year.

We, who all are up and ready to come up with our hard $$ for whatever purple fart they might release, multiple times a year.

-

...the 'other fans'. Phuh.

Because you have to understand that if Howe said " We have songs from the Dawn ( I never heard of this thing before, and frankly I don't care), then Prince fans will read it, and will spread the news to the medias.
Do you Know what does it imply ?

Then, people in their lockdown and losing their jobs would absolutely want The Dawn to be released. There would be massive riots in the streets, everywhere in the World.
.
Then, the estate would be obliged to release it to respond to the huge demand, and sell it to millions copies.
That would break their ultimate plan, that is to release Originals vol. 2 in 2025 and sell it to 50.000 copies worldwide, without even printing the lyrics.

It is true. Everyone remembers the uprising in Minneapolis last year when it was discovered that certain vault tracks weren't on the sott SDE. It was just not reported widely because the estate paid the media off.

Exactly.

This shows the level of unprofessionalism with WB/Estate/etc.

And the questions are also not so very deep.

Is it so hard to actually dig a picture of how these people work?

Who does what?

Who decides?

What is the process?

Etc.

Or is that also under NDA?

lol

I don't really understand why all the outrage, no one forces anyone to buy these Sony rereleases, and they don't get in the way of archive releases either since these are 2 separate programs.

.

Based on what Sony has done so far, it appears this will be a regular reissue, not a SDE, so remastering seems out of the question for now (but may eventually happen for some sort of SDE). As for any sort of re-editing or tinkering, I simply can't believe there are still people daring asking for this. P's albums (or any other artist's albums, for that matter) are what they are and should remain so after they die. Asking for archivists to alter them is, forgive me for being so blunt, utter stupidity.

.

The interview contained some other interesting, if somewhat cryptic, news, though.

Yep, don't see the problem with this at all. It's a reissue of an out of print album, so now people who don't have it will be able to buy it.
