first Prince song you ever heard, first album you ever had?

I honestly cannot remember if it was When Doves Cry or Let's Go Crazy. I DO remember for sure the most memorable moment for me was with Crazy. A friend of mine gave me a mixed tape and the song was there and heard it for the first time. I may have not even known who Prince was. I couldn't believe the song and especially the beginning spoken part. Out of this world. Totally in awe. Around the same time i discovered Let's Pretend We're Married. Man, was I crazy for that song too.

First album was from another mixed tape from a friend, ha ha. It was Purple Rain and I made a copy. I was too young to have money to buy albums. It was finally in 1989 when i bought MY first album (cassette) and it was the Batman soundtrack. And since we are in the topic, my first maxi single was Batdance, vinyil. A cousin bought it for me in the U.S. by mistake. I had ordered him the album instead. Regardless, I LOVED that maxi single!!! Can't recall which was my first CD. Perhaps Graffiti Bridge in 1990. At that point i was DJing for parties and had some extra money so started catching up and buying his whole discography on CD.

I Wanna Be Your Lover on a K-Tel record back in 79/80 is the first Prince song I heard. I was 10. I had no idea who he was and wasn't sure about the song at first, but of course it grew on me.

1999 was the first Prince album I owned. I didn't get past the first three songs for months...I loved them that much. Then I finally flipped the record and couldn't believe my 13 year old ears. I could not have ran to the stereo to turn it down fast enough at the end of Let's Pretend We're Married.

This is my story, too. I was 11 in 1979. Similar thread here. Soundwaves was the first time I heard Prince sing anything. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was tucked into side one, with Diana Ross, Lipps, Inc., Jermaine Jackson, Kiss, Pat Benatar, etc. I still have two copies of that on vinyl. It was never released on CD (I asked them). There is a Canadian version that varies greatly.

It's a great playlist. Create it in Spotify or something. The cassette sequence differs a bit, probably because of timing issues. Prince is halfway into side B. But the LP is the original.

Here's the Canadian version:

Controversy

I was 7 or 8 years old and saw the video of it in '81 and was hooked immediatly and begged my mother to buy me the single and she bought me the album instead. Have been a fan ever since then.

First Song: 1999 as seen on MTV by what I thought was a very cool looking new wave-ish looking BAND called "Prince".

Like many here, the first album I owned was Purple Rain.

I remember this album. "Controversy" was on another K-Tel album a few years later with Rick James, Shalamar, The Dazz Band, etc.

First song where I ws paying attention and really got the vibe was of course the video of "Little Red Corvette"

It seemed quite cool and catchy. Before that I had heard "1999" and "Controversy" but didn't really know where they were comin from.

Check Discogs as well. It's out there. Strangely enough, I randomly found my copies in local shops. My boyfriend at the time brought it home, knowing about it because I had talked about it so much. I also had Ronco Solid Gold and KTel Full Tilt. They were mainstays for me.

I remember me and my sisters and cousins singing When Doves Cry at the top of our voices, "Maybe she's just like my mother, she's never satsified!" to our mums in '84. My uncle was obsessed with Purple Rain and made us watch the film a few times--it was excused that it was so raunchy because of what a talent and great guitar player Prince was. So I knew Purple Rain really well and then listened to Around The World in a Day with my friend's sister who insisted we listen to it, and remember hearing Kiss on the radio. My best friend and sister were obsessed with Prince and so their obsessions fuelled mine. The first album I actually bought myself was Sign o' the Times. We had tickets to see him in London for SOTT but it was cancelled (year of mourning until the Lovesexy concert). I made it a mission to own all his albums and bought all 8 of them (on tape back then) from For You to Parade. In 1988 my best friend got me tapes for my 18th Birthday with She's Always in My Hair, Alexa De Paris, Erotic City, La, La, La, He, He, Hee etc, and a bootleg tape with We Can Funk (written as We Can Fall), Joy in Repetition, Data Bank, A Place in Heaven etc, called the Chocolate Box--best gifts ever.

The year is 2020 and there's no more fear.
