that last verse of purple rain This has prob been asked before but listening to a remake of it recently made me think that while musically its great which is maybe all that matters, does the song make sense? Or, does that last verse even go the others?
Obv he starts off talking about a breakup The last verse is the one that confuses me though What does being a leader have to do with anything ? Was he part of an activist group? Did the breakup lead the girl to want a cult leader to follow? Did the breakup mean prince thought he had to become the messiah? Is the purple rain a cult faction prince was trying to induct us into? Or was he talking about an election, and voter indecision? Great guitar though. [Edited 12/28/20 10:59am] [Edited 12/28/20 14:13pm]

I'll let someone else take a shot at this analysis, but no question Prince has plenty of head-scratcher lyrics.

I've read about that verse and that just shows he was maybe not totally there in understanding the power ballad genre yet lol
Prince had some weird lyrics about money actually Like the end of rebirth of the flesh How did 'all u do is steal' end up there?! [Edited 12/28/20 12:41pm]

Well, I'll just add it up to this. With the "Purple Rain" project, I believe he knew it was at a point where he had to make an ultimate statement. So, with that verse, he was trying to tell the "general public": "Look, I've done all I can do to show you who I really am. It's either you get it by now, or you don't. But I'm going to kick some ass anyway!". Exiles of the Nation

Prince did have some messianic tendencies at certain times in his career... thats actually quite normal of someone so spiritual and gifted and intelligent and beautiful...

[Edited 12/28/20 10:59am] [Edited 12/28/20 14:13pm] You have to hear that in context, the lead in to that verse is “Honey, I know times are changing, it's time we all reach out for something new...”, and the conclusion is “U say u want a leader, but u can't seem to make up your mind, I think u better close it, and let me guide you 2 the purple rain.” I’ve always understood that to mean that she was dissatisfied, times are changing, new stresses and circumstances are confronting them. In the discord, she decides she wants someone more exciting/novel to “lead her” or be with her. He’s asking her to have faith in him (close her mind), and let him be the one to guide her amidst all the uncertainty and anxiety.

I took it to mean she says what she wants is a take charge kinda guy but she still resists when the guy does take charge like when prince told her to stay away from morris and told her to not drink

i guess prince just had a lot going on in this period eg -

I thought that the last verse was directed towards the audience and reflected his religious belief system and his role as a preacher with the answers. RJ mentioned it, a messianic tendency @ times. He had such a deep, commanding voice and understood how to control an audience...that must have been heady. [Edited 12/30/20 8:48am]

Yup! At that time i think he was trying to tell "the audience" that they don't exactly know what they want, and if they don't, then please "follow me" HOWEVER, i think he meant musically... "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

Then there's how, in Prince world, music and divine stuff can get all mixed up together.

Maybe he's singing to a different audience in the last verse. The first verses are to a specific woman, then the end it's to the whole world.

I sort of think it was the beginning of his tendency to preach.

You know, I believe he was aiming to become the King of Funk/Rock...and he practically accomplished that goal with "Purple Rain", if he didn't already with "1999" before that. You kind of need followers to be that. Someone's gotta be the leader...Nobody is anymore. Nobody in the mainstream anyway. That's what I took away from the verse. He was definitely a genius of "the unexpected". I think that's one of the reasons why he inspires us so much, right? Exiles of the Nation

Some more observations possibly relevant to that time. Most here are likely already familiar with observations like this. "When describing Prince’s “Purple Rain” tour, during which the artist had conversations with God onstage, Hahn quotes Bloom as saying, “Prince had been rebelling against God and morality, and now God and morality were taking him over.”
Through my interview, I learned that Bloom did not necessarily mean “God” in the literal sense, but more as a representation of Prince’s conscience, or more mature self. “In the metamorphoses from adolescence to adulthood, you go from rebelling against your father to becoming your father,” Bloom said. “And who represents the father? Who’s a convenient way to personalize the voice of the father inside of you? God.”
Bloom didn’t deny that Prince may have had a certain spiritual power in mind, but he couldn’t confirm it, especially since Prince never discussed spirituality with him. “My guess is that he was not ideological about any specific religion at all…It would take him some time before he found some specific [religion].”

My long held belief, which I definitely picked up from someone who thinks more deeply about this stuff than I do, is that verse one is directed at his parents, verse two is for the girl, and verse three is for the band. So the song sort of covers the whole plot of the movie. Is what I always thought.

He's asking the girl to follow along with him, to let him guide her to wherever his journey goes.

Why does it seem like people here don't like sprituality or anything along those lines when it comes to Prince and his music? this is a constant theme here. Is majority of the place athiest?
