I could answer this is multiple ways. Are you using the term "CD" to generically mean album, as in: "What was the first Prince album you bought, regardless of medium (e.g. cassette tape, vinyl, etc.)?" Or do you literally mean compact disc?

The first Prince album I owned was a copy of Purple Rain on cassette. My best friend had one of those dual cassette decks and made me a copy.

The first Prince album I actually purchased was the vinyl of Sign O' the Times.

The first CD I purchased was a bootleg (Crystal Ball). Like some other people who've posted, I didn't even own a CD player when I first started buying CDs. I wanted to build up my collection while I saved up for a CD player.

I'm less confident about the first commerical CD I purchased. It was probably Batman.

How about this question?

What was the first Prince CD... you bought on (or before) its Release date?

Mine is the Symbol album!

I did not have a CD player until late 88... when Batman came I had recorded the album off the radio and the nearest shop that had it was an hour away so no rush.... When DandP came out in was 800 miles from a proper store and I had to wait a week or two to get a copy...

But I got the Symbol album CD day one! (I do regret not getting the clean version)

1999 on vinyl. Back then a single record usually cost $4.99. $3.99 if it was on sale. 1999 was specially priced at $6.99. A great price for a double album. Couldn't pass up such a great bargain.

And the first CD you got?????

Lovesexy

I'm pretty sure it was Batman, but it may have been Graffiti Bridge. I don't trust my memory in my old age.

Sign O' the Times on vinyl was the first album I bought on release date.

In fact, from SoTT through the Love Symbol Album, I bought all of his releases on their release data.

Purple Rain...the same day I bought my first CD player from Sears. It was a nice upgrade from my warped, worn-out cassette.

My first CD SINGLE was a "Glam Slam" promo with the edit and album version.

Which reminds me, anyone want to sell me a tracked 'Lovesexy' for a decent price? smile

You can find them online for cheap. The european versions all tracked. I got mine (German pressing) for $10.

I got into Prince through the drumming of John Blackwell. I heard the major hits like When Doves Cry, Kiss, etc. But after seeing Blackwell play, I wanted to dig deeper. So I went to a local record store and they had a hamdful.of Prince albums. The one I fucking decided on? New Power Soul. My next one though was 1999, and that was when the obsession began.

Emancipation.
It was sold for about 10 euros in a wreckastore back in 2001. I was 15 years old.
It s been a few years I was interested in Prince, but waited to have all the MJ's album first. biggrin
.
One voice in my head said " The medias says that since he changed his name it s crappy".
Another voice said " Common, 3 CDs for 10 bucks, that s a deal. And who knows? Medias also said MJ s last albums were crappy, and they were great. Maybe Emancipation is the best album ever. "
.
And in fact, I never loved an album so much, besides History, than Emancipation.

The first CD I ever had was Elton John's "Sleeping with the past" in 1989. Won it off the radio before I even had CD player. The first Prince CD I bought new was most likely "Graffiti Bridge". I remember having "Batman" on cassette, but I've only ever had GB on CD. I may have had some of the older catalouge on CD before that. I don't remember.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I had the cassette and I noticed it said tracks are in a continual sequence... Something like that I didn't know what it meant. I found out about 6 months later when I got to CD. I was less than amused.

I think it might have been Lovesexy, but then I remember owning the 12" of "Alphabet Str.", so that makes me think I might not have had a CD player yet at that time? But from Batman on it was definately all CD's.

I honestly don't remember. I remember 1999 was the first vinyl I bought without having a turntable. I had other motivations for that. I've never been the type to gravitate to the newest tech as soon as possible so I don't even remember my 1st cd player to even care about getting the cd version of anything. It probably was my husband who got me the 1st cd of Prince, he was more into that kind of stuff. So maybe SOTT, maybe Parade. Hell I don't even remember the format I had PR in so maybe... shrug Either way he most likely bought it.
Time keeps on slipping into the future...
