Purple Music on 6Music (UK)

So Hot Chip played a fun house remix of Purple Music by Jamie 3:26 (never heard of him before) a little earlier on 6Music. (Which was an unexpected glimmer of festive light in locked down, lettuce-challanged London.)

.

Wondered if the remix was in any way official, does any one know?

A couple more seconds of research (i.e. entering the artist and title in Google) revealed the source of this (which I won't link to here since it is blatantly obvious this record is not an authorized release, despite it being available through legit sites).

lol Thanks Bart! I don't know where we'd all be without your strict admonishments to be our best selves and keep our stupidiy in check!

You'll be relieved to learn I did do a couple more seconds of research before I posted and reached the same conclusion as you - that it was unofficial. I was just a bit surprised to hear it on the BBC as my experience dealing with the BBC music clearance team is they're usually keen to avoid copyright infringement. Hence me checking here if it was actually legit. I guess you get a pass at the BBC if you're as down with Prince as Hot Chip.

Then why ask?

Plenty of artists play unreleased remixes on shows like this. Radio has AFAIK enormous leeway. Soulwax even got a radio license for their "Radio Soulwax" website precisely because it allowed them to post their mixes online that way (instead of going the route they went with their mix album, which required their management to spend enourmous efforts into getting everything cleared). Hot Chip getting away with playing a remix of dodgy origins has got nothing to do with their love of Prince music.
