I was told long ago (very early in his career & good source) he did smoke though, but it wasn't anything he did daily, just occasionally.

Though I don't think he was much of a smoker, he held the cig like a pro. Many non-smoking actors/actresses who need to play a role involving smoking, do not hold the cigarette comfortably.
