Home Recordings from 77-78

For the first time in a LONG time I was listening to these recordings, which, from what I've gathered through search, are "Home Recordings 1977-78."

They aren't very long. They aren't nearly as virtuosic as the Studio 80 sessions. But I love them. They're otherworldly. Some have a weird tropical island vibe. And there's some sensational guitar playing. Does anyone know anything more about what these were for, or ANYTHING beside when they were recorded?

Instrumental 1 (2:14)
Instrumental 2 (2:21)
Instrumental 3 (0:52)
Instrumental 4 (1:11)
Instrumental 5 (1:30)
Instrumental 6 (0:37)

Those were home recorded at André's house in 1976 (between June and September according to Scififilmnerd's blog: https://chronologicalprin...pot.com/), so earlier than you think, hence the poor quality and lack of obvious purpose to them.

It was just an 18 year old Prince tinkering and experimenting really, I don't think there's much more of a story about them.

Thanks for clearing that up. Yes, it's definitely a lot of tinkering. But it's remarkable how developed his chops were at this point, even, in my estimation, beyond what we heard on the first few albums. He could do A LOT different rhythms and grooves pretty masterfully right out the gate. These instrumentals showcase that, much as the Studio 80 takes do.

Great catch!! How on earth did u find it? I've been searching for entries for the untitled instrumentals (these, the Moonsound session and a few others) but they're not on any of the main songs' lists sad

Thanks for reminding me about them, I first heard them when everything was going up on Youtube just after we lost Prince. Yes, I like these funky instrumental jams, just listening to them now on Youtube since you mentioned them. I've always liked his instrumental music. I also love Just Another Sucker, great stuff.

The year is 2020 and there's no more fear.

I googled “Prince Home recordings 77-78”, as OP suggested, and came on a Princevault page called something like “Category:Recorded 1977”. Since you said the recordings were from 1976, I modified the hyperlink from “1977” to “1976”, and this resulted in the link that I provided above 😃
Yeah, you learn some things after using the internet for 25 years 😂
Have a nice X-mas!

Speaking of "home recordings", I found myself thinking about this yesterday.

What's the earliest known known video recorded of Prince? I'd like to think there's some home movies of him as a 5 year old or as a baby out there somewhere.
