"Dime" is a reference to making a call on a pay telephone. Pay phones don't exist anymore. Though, frankly, a call cost at least a quarter by the 80s - so the reference was already obsolete when the song was written. I'm guessing he used "dime" because it was only one syllable and fit the rhythm better - and because calls were a dime when he was growing up.
But, pay phones DO exist...and you should probably know that, because in an emergency (like an earthquake, for example), pay phones are the FIRST lines of communication that are restored for use. Therefor, it's a very good idea to know where the nearest pay phone is...
Lastly, the term "dropped a dime" references snitching or reporting. Not literally a dime (althoufgh there's probably some level of tie in to a pay phoen call).
