outdated references in prince lyrics

Was prince really using a pager in 2007? (Somewhere here on earth)
Was it really going down like the wall in Berlin in 2006? (3121)

Well, lots of elderly people still read the paper and the wall of Berlin was a very sginificant period in history, so I would say that although these may seem outdated to some, they're not entirely How about Dynasty from Kiss?

"Dime" is a reference to making a call on a pay telephone. Pay phones don't exist anymore. Though, frankly, a call cost at least a quarter by the 80s - so the reference was already obsolete when the song was written. I'm guessing he used "dime" because it was only one syllable and fit the rhythm better - and because calls were a dime when he was growing up.

Right on, Genesia. Also forgot this, also from Now: "It's a dime, as in 'dollars', and that's my two bloody cents"

The wall of Berlin mention in 3121, and the the song itself, was always a bit funny to me. The wall came down in 1989 so was curious why he referenced it in two songs some 15 years later

"Give me a page on my two-way. I'll hit you back with no delay."

I love that line. Its anachronism is what makes so adorable. Works especially well on the One Nite Alone album version.

The fake vinyl crackle plus the pager line date it twice lol. If it was an 80s sounding song, singing about a pager would make sense.

He was clearly catching up on news
Maybe he was too busy recording at the time the wall fell.

I think you are confusing U’re Gonna See Me and Somewhere Here on Earth but yes both have pager references.

Not too much. I remember in 1989, my friend Karen got a box from her older brother who lived outside of the state. He sent her a video phone. It sent still images on a little 3" black and white screen, but it worked and it was amazing to see, in 1989.

Remember that was 1996, and AOL was already out and being used. Everyone was on that or Compuserve in 1996/7 as the internet became more and more prevelant in homes.

He certainly wasn't saying the Berlin wall falling was current. But it was a significant part of history. He's using it as a euphemism or a metaphor. It's the same as saying "it fells like the walls of Jericho!"

There've been video phones since the 1960s.
