An Honest Man - about Jesus?

This song came up on random today. I hadn't heard it in ages, but after listening to the lyrics, I wondered if this song is about Jesus?

The part about being together if Prince died is what stood out to me as possibly being about Jesus. It doesn't make sense if it's about a love interest.

Thoughts?

I want to be an honest man
I'll be your slave, just understand
How much I need you
And if I died
We'll be together side by side
With you I know I can stand, stand
With you I can be an honest man

Nope.

Prince often talked about death and being with someone after death, dying in someone's arms, etc. Some line about dying and being side by side could be anything, but Jesus isn't near the top of that list.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I think that's a strength in his songwriting that even something so simple can take on multiple meanings. I think in this case he was specifically writing to the UTCM storyline, but that's the beauty of music - let it mean something _to you_

It is an interesting line. How would they be side by side if he died, unless the other person is dead as well. Interesting question.

.

Once upon a time in France
there lived a bad boy name Christopher Tracey

Only 1 thing mattered 2 Christopher... money
the women he knew came in all sizes shapes & colors
and they were all rich, very rich

Private concertos kind words & fun is what he had 2 offer them
yes Christopher lived 4 all women
but he died 4 1
Somewhere along the way he learned the true meaning of love

Initial tracking took place on 30 November, 1985 (on the same day as Mountains) at the Washington Avenue Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA. It is thought that the a capella version was created around the same time, and it may have been intended as a brief opening track for the Parade album, in the same vein as For You on the For You album. The Crystal Ball liner notes state that the song is "inspired by Kristin Scott Thomas' character Mary Sharon in Under The Cherry Moon."

From the piece Christopher wrote for Mary Sharon, while she read it in the grotto

I want 2 be an honest man
I'll be Ur slave, just understand
How much I need U
And if I lie, I'm part of U
This is my crime
I do know laughter, I do know tears
But all is nothing, without U near
We are of 1 soul, and if I die
We'll be together side by side
With U I know that I can stand
With U I can be an honest man

It was about Bruce Wayne, since it was supposed to be on Batman.

Wait, wait, wait.... In the end of UTCM, Prince is in heaven, ressurected.... and MARY is the female lead.... the Holy Ghost is ephemeral, you could almost say "Tricky"..... oh, em, gee... UTCM is a biblical allegory eek eek eek

Crazy how just a few different lines can change the whole dynamic of a song. These lyrics are far more poetic!
