The 87 - 89 band was awesome. Prince had all those great musicians plus himself laying it down on guitar, mic, keys, drum, and dancing. This era was when my appreciation of Prince really jumped up. Sign of the Times was the first album that I got into a lot in real-time.

What are your favorites aspects of live performances of this era?
- The after shows are great: New Morning 87, Small Club 88, San Francisco 88, and many more, even if I've only heard parts of some.
- I love the interactions between Prince, Sheila, and Cat, including the choreographed moments like Erotic City on the Lovesexy tour and also the looser musical interactions with Sheila and Prince on the versions of Just My Imagination.

For me, the '87-'88 after shows are where this band shined.
The main SOTT shows don't show them at their best, the sets were too rigid to my ears. Breaks from the norm were rare on that tour. Once you've heard one SOTT show you've pretty much heard them all. There were small exceptions of course.
The Lovesexy main shows seemed to contain a little more fluidity.

Don't know about 'no name' but in the 90s I think Levi or Miko mentioned that Prince called that band The New Power Generation. Probably like the Controversy/1999 band officially being the first incarnation of The Revolution.

Levi also wore a jacket with NPG down the back on the Lovesexy tour.
