Prince and the Band with No Name

The 87 - 89 band was awesome. Prince had all those great musicians plus himself laying it down on guitar, mic, keys, drum, and dancing. This era was when my appreciation of Prince really jumped up. Sign of the Times was the first album that I got into a lot in real-time.

De Angela Duff organized a great series of roundtables, interviews, and after salons about the SOTT SDE. After Salons 4 and 5 about Prince and the Band with No Name were great, especially this one: https://www.youtube.com/w...otqAfYYpuk

and there's this roundtable on the Utrecht show with jooZt from Prince Vault: https://www.youtube.com/w...OeZI38U-zw

What are your favorites aspects of live performances of this era?
- The after shows are great: New Morning 87, Small Club 88, San Francisco 88, and many more, even if I've only heard parts of some.
- I love the interactions between Prince, Sheila, and Cat, including the choreographed moments like Erotic City on the Lovesexy tour and also the looser musical interactions with Sheila and Prince on the versions of Just My Imagination.

Mods ... this isn't a podcast or an associated artist. This is Prince and his live performances plus cool discussions with scholars and their friends.

For me, the '87-'88 after shows are where this band shined.
The main SOTT shows don't show them at their best, the sets were too rigid to my ears. Breaks from the norm were rare on that tour. Once you've heard one SOTT show you've pretty much heard them all. There were small exceptions of course.
The Lovesexy main shows seemed to contain a little more fluidity.

Don't know about 'no name' but in the 90s I think Levi or Miko mentioned that Prince called that band The New Power Generation. Probably like the Controversy/1999 band officially being the first incarnation of The Revolution.

It would be nice if those shows can be available on DVD for the younger Prince fans to view and for any Prince fan to purchase and watch! πŸ˜ƒ πŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸ’ΏπŸŽΈπŸŽ€πŸŽΈπŸ“ΊπŸŒ™βββββ

I think the nude tour band were the first npg band? Shame the npg was the only name he used for his bands for 15 years!

Yes, yes, yes! The after shows, sound checks, and rehearsals. I’d love that band intro show at First Avenue and then four or so that I’ve never seen. That version of Strange Relationship is amazing!

probably his best all around band. they literally could play and execute everything well. Their thing was mainly jazz fusion and funk though; which is still quite alright. His first band where EVERYBODY could solo improvisationally too. They don't get as much credit cause they didn't have a movie or a name but don't sleep on them.

This band and the 2001 band could compete but this band have the edge, as they are funkier and tighter.

Levi also wore a jacket with NPG down the back on the Lovesexy tour.

I’m glad that De Angela and her folks are highlighting the importance of this band to the Sign o the Times era. It’s a good counter narrative to the unfortunate biases in the box set. Ricky, Nicolay, C. Leigh, and everybody are bringing it. I highly encourage having a listen.

Well, they had the SOTT movie.
