The only thing I remember that used to be embarrassing to me as a Prince fan, was back in the day when we had cassette players, and I used to be listening to Prince, and a song would come up that I didn't want my parents to hear, like Head or Do Me Baby, or something else with Prince moaning sexually, and you couldn't just skip over the song like you could later with a CD player, so I had to keep hitting the fast forward button trying to skip over the bad parts, or skip the song completely. For some reason, I didn't have headphones back then, I just used to blast the music. Headphones probably would have made things a lot easier for me, and less embarrassing. lol That's really the only thing that embarrassed me. I got the usual "what in the world do you see in Prince, and why do you like Prince?" questions, and people thinking I was strange because I did, but that didn't embarrass me.

Your first part lol razz biggrin

And to the bolded part: The Purple Fam know Prince is and was a Badd MuthaFunka!!! Playing all those Instruments, Monster on the Guitar, Fashion Icon, Hellavu Dancer and Choreographer, Excellent Lyricsist!!! yes prince eye wildsign crysball fro music headbang

Watching PR on video with my mom and brothers and then slowly dying as THAT love scene started to happen... confused

Watching PR with my mother and sister as he performs darling nikki and starts to grind on the damn speaker lol don't remember if that love scene comes before or after, but I think I left the room for that one.

lol I definitely could relate. I remember watching the award show with my family, mother included, when he was performing and did the oh so talked about "ass out pant thing!".....You should have seen my mother's face! She kept shaking her head back and forth, with her mouth opened, like she couldn't believe what he did! lol....I remember feeling so embarrassed, because I had made such a big deal that Prince would be performing that night, and then he proceeded to show his naked butt to the world! lol I don't think I ever lived that one down with them. It only added more fuel to the "what do you see in Prince, and this is guy you're so crazy about?" fire. disbelief

Well that ass was fake, so you could probably save some face now biggrin but there's really some things you don't watch with your parents when it comes to prince.

My mom took me to see Purple Rain back in '84. I was only 12 that summer that it came out.

We went to one of our local shopping mall theaters, and once we got there I saw a few friends from school and asked my mom if I could sit with them (jerk move, looking back!). My mom stayed closer to the back and my friends and I were more in the middle of the theater.

Then the Lake Minnetonka scene and later the basement scene . . . it was very weird watching knowing that my mom was also watching from many rows behind. She never said anything, and in the 36 years since has loved that I'm a Prince fan and loves his music.

You know, someone did a good job, because it didn't look fake to us back then when we were watching, but you're right, there are really some things that you don't watch with your family, especially when it comes to Prince! With him, you never knew what he would do at any given time....learned that lesson well! lol

at the time most people thought it was his butt... it was not until pretty recent when the person thay made the coustume said it was a flesh tone pannel. As far as I can recall no one really questioned it until that designer spilled the beans. I would say most that claim to have known back then or claim to be able to tell are in the same catgory as thoes that claim to have been a Prince fan since Soft and Wet came out...

Back in the 80s i was living in Lima, Peru. A prude Mormon cousin of mine was living in Miami. I had her go to the store and buy the Lovesexy album with the naked Prince on the cover of course. I'm sure she felt very confortable about it. She shipped the CD all the way to Lima. That's when i noticed that the CD was a one-track CD and thought it was a glitch. I sent her back the CD and told her to go back to the store and ask for another copy since mine was "defective". So there she went my Mormon cousin with naked Prince back to the store to argue with the store people and get a new copy or a refund. They explained the situation to her and that's how i found out the CD was supposed to be like that. wink

Hey, there wasn't internet back then for me to find out about these things! smile

And just think about how many naked Prince CDs were being shuffled around cuz of that "one-track" crap.

This 1 is an easy 1 for me. It was the early 90's. I was sitting with my friend in a diner grabbing a bite to eat. They had the mini juke boxes in each stall. The friend I was with is very casual Prince fan and I was introducing them to Prince's vast music library. I was flipping through the choices in the mini juke box in our stall and came across the song God. Put in a quarter and pressed play.

What happened next was embarassing to say the least.

God started playing in this pretty full diner and it was relatively quiet. Until Prince started screaming. It was then that I realized there was no volume dial etc... So I just quietly hunkered down and ate my cheeseburger and my friend put on his hoodie. All the while Prince was screaming with everyone just staring at us.

The song ended. I paid my bill. Left a big tip and made my way to the exit.

Embarrassing.

I'm like oh shit remembering the "sexy mfs shakin that ass" part coming up doh!. The father (?) was cool about it thank god lol. Y do/did places have songs like that (unedited no less) for the general public (ie me dumb dumb) to play around with lol.

A lot of his 90s material sound at the time like an old man trying to catch up with us adolescents and teens. Even as a tween I knew he was downgrading...as I was buying his older material and seeing his prime was much better. I would say playing Rave in school was cringy. Many kids my age (13-17) did not like the stuff He was putting out. Although there were some good moments like the Emancipation era...but wasnt until the 2000s where I started being proud of his output again.

Also now that i think of it...it was all his hip hop stuff he was trying at. Being from the hood...he just could not compete with Bone, Biggie, NWA amd all that and not sure why he was trying so hard because it came off as fake to a true hip hop fan. He already had the love from the black audience without trying to do something he was not really a part of sonically.
