what were prince's mid life crisis years? i have it down as approx 1997/98 to 2014/15 or thereabouts.
during this period, prince became very nostalgic, reached out to all his boyhood heroes, started playing a lot of music that sounded like the stuff he loved as a teenager, started delivering a lot of dad jokes on stage and increasingly sounded like someone's funky uncle when he was talking in between songs on tour, seemed to be bored with a lot of what he was doing (except on stage revisiting his and other artists' glorious pasts - the 2004 tour does this quite excellently). he also went back and got the same haircut he had in his late teens/early 20s (think the 'for you' era).
from the sounds of it, on the last tour, he seemed to be getting over it, and coming to terms with his life, what his career meant, and thinking of ways to move ahead, though as its prince, who really knows.

I'd say 1998 (started around NPS) through 2009. I think by 20Ten he was more at easy with his "old man at the club" status.

He wasn't old enough for a midlife crisis in the 90s... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Wasnt he hospitalized or something happened in 2010?
In 1996 or 1997 he was hospitalized because he overdosed on wine and aspirin [Edited 11/2/20 12:25pm]

It’s like that time Nicole Brown Simpson accidentally fell down the stairs in the mid 1980’s. Probably not entirely true. [Edited 11/2/20 15:12pm]

The Rainbow Children was the beginning of his mid-life crisis. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Prince was never in a crisis, because as a JW age was irrelevant to him.

2010. From what I was told, it was 2011 in LA. Had his stomach pumped at Cedars-Sinai and almost died then. One of the reasons of his eventual falling out with Sheila.

His midlife crisis was around when he died. He chose not to take proper care of his body at a point where money would have been no issue. This points to severe distraction from what really counts at that time. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I don't think he had a "mid life" crisis. Like many of us, he changed and grew as he got older. The most notable part is that, in spite of what fans and critics wanted to force-feed people about his ethnicity, he was always a Black man, and you could see him surround himself with the musicians and influences from his youth. I personally loved the way he showed love to Black women during those years. People tend to internalize cultural values as they age. It was beautiful seeing him at shows with Shelby and Liv. I think he enjoyed being around people that truly got who he was at that point in his life.

First of all, not to say I feel you are being unduly harsh, but as I'm unsure of your point of view... [Edited 11/3/20 14:49pm]

So, basically his whole JW period?

do you mean he got rid of his internalised values as he got older? surrounding yourself with ppl from your youth is good in one sense, for security, friendship, comfort, familiarity, etc, but not always best for creativity and progression. i think he only really got people from his youth in the early to mid 90s anyway.
id like to hear from his collaborators in the later years. theyve been pretty silent. rhonda for example.

Correct. He needed a full replacement of both hips, not a repair. That's why Morris Day mentioned his own hip replacement to P when he performed at Paisley. P was in a world of pain outside of any other health issues he had which were never disclosed. One hip was much worse than the other and was basically bone-on-bone by the time he passed. so, people that never spent time with a man, or as much as held a conversation with a man, can somehow diagnose this stranger from afar, as having a "mid-life crisis"? .... a supremely successful and accomplished man at that.. word?

I don't see Prince as having a particular "mid-life" crisis, but around the dates you quoted (not in bertween) - 1998-2000 and then 2014-2016 he was ending serious relationships, and quite nostalgic. Ending the thing with Mani, he was just angry.
