Prince songs about bereavement (playlist)

I suddenly lost my father-in-law recently, and me and my wife are inconsolable. I reach out to the old hands who know of me here, and the new ones who don't because i seldom post. My wife loves Prince, and I was thinking if we could cook up a Prince playlist of serious bereavement songs, or songs which sound like bereavement, since Prince would often treat breakups as death too, and feel all cut up about it.

9 songs will do, the classic prince LP formula, with an epic at the end or the beginning. I feel he never should have veered away from that formula, regardless of audio release format, since it helped him edit his output better. But I digress...

1. Sometimes it snows in april?

(not an opener? feel free to change)

2. Old Friends For Sale

(heh. don't know)

3. Purple Rain sounds like god has died and you've smoked his ashes, but I don't know...

Guys help me out here. Live cuts welcome too, but 9 song playlist only. Each song can be 30 minutes, time no bar.....multiple playlists welcome...

My condolences. I'd go with The Holy River and The Ladder, they give me strength and clarity.

Yup. Thx. Very Good choices. They need to fit into a cohesive playlist.

It's amazing how the holy river sounds like bereavement when it is an affirmation song. But it does.

The NPGMC Ahdio Show #8, just after 9/11, would be a great starter. They're not necessarily about losing someone, they're also positive or uplifting/spiritual/gospel type tunes.

Eye88.png No - Prince (intro only)
The Plan - SymbolSmallerBlue.png
Anna Stesia - Prince
Elephants & Flowers - Prince
I Wish U Heaven - Prince
Love... Thy Will Be Done (Prince Mix) - Martika (intro only)
Pearls B4 The Swine - Prince
7 (Acoustic Version) - Prince and the New Power Generation
Space (Universal Love Remix) - Prince
Still Would Stand All Time - Prince
Into The Light - SymbolSmallerBlue.png
I Will - SymbolSmallerBlue.png
The Holy River - SymbolSmallerBlue.png
Outro (including New Power Generation (Pt. II) and Positivity) - Prince

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Not sure, but I think The Grand Progression would be a nice addition to your set list.

i couldnt actually think of many songs for this theme.

there is eye love you but i dont trust you anymore (sad but not appropriate for death).

sometimes it snows, obviously.

ive never actually found that quite as affecting as others do, just cos i think its too much about a character (i think i read any earlier version had different lyrics, which might make it different, idk)

i dont actually think prince has many properly sad songs. moving, yes, but sad sad?

hes not kurt cobain, or hendrix even. or nina simone or marvin gaye. idk if prince mined that level of melancholy in his music.

even the sadder/heartbreak songs seem to be kind of a sort of sad where he doesnt get tooooo sad.

old friends for sale is maybe as sad as he got?

maybe i should listen to comeback from the truth again.

dodgers playlist seems good.

the love we make is excellent.

tbh when my mum died i couldnt think of the right songs, from prince or anyone, to listen to.

nothing seemed appropriate, or 'got' how i was feeling.

but some time has passed now so maybe that will be different.

Hi Trivial, lovely and moving songs. Always loved "Into the Light" followed by "I Will"--haunting. I remember getting Chaos and Disorder at the time and feeling upset for him and that it was this throw away album because he was forced into releasing it for WB, but I played and played it and loved it.

The year is 2020 and there's no more fear.

the thing about prince is most of his sad songs are about relationships with women

so that doesnt always fit other sad events

its not like john lennon for example

but hey, who cares about lyrics lol, you can just go with the mood

anyway, the last december is a song i thought of that might work

also power fantastic

4 the tears in yr eyes

I'm sorry for your loss, I've experienced it and I still feel this kind of empiteness that leaves your mind and heart dry, without asking any permission.

I think that these are the 9 Prince songs that could help me to cope with it:

1. When Doves Cry
2. Father's Song
3. Anna Stesia
4. Arboretum
5. The Holy River
6. Reflection
7. Into The Light
8. Space (Universal Love Mix)
9. Affirmation I & II - Way Back Home - Affirmation III
