Even though I'm not totally in love with every song on it (I'm looking at you, The Gold Standard and Funknroll), I really can't break up Art Official Age. I mean, it was Prince's last fully-realized concept album and, without question, the strongest thing he'd done since Lotusflow3r.

The HnRs (especially 1) can suck it, in general.

Funny. I like the two songs you don't like and I can't stand Breakfast Can Wait, but still, I agree with you about AOA!
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

When I heard that Prince had let Joshua Welton produce HnR1, that's when I knew something had gone south with the man.

sure, theres a handful on each, its just that, for fans, i think a lot of them will be enjoyable, but to convince someone outside, that prince was still making great material in this period, idk how convincing a lot of these loooooong playlists would be. thats what i was thinking when i made my post about a 90s playlist - trying to convince an outsider, rather than just a playlist of songs for fans to play for other fans.

i want to play catch up, but idk if i can bring myself to properly sit through a lot of these songs. there is a lot of music in the world to listen to....

The video is a very direct presentation of what was happening in the city. I wonder if you'd find it even more of an odd disconnect to hear the song while seeing the images. I like the song and video, but as I'm sure you know, you're far from alone in finding that Baltimore didn't really work.

Much appreciate your thoughts and song examples. They bring even more songs to mind...music from my parents Weavers records, Mahalia Jackson singing We Shall Overcome, The Times They Are a-Changin, Get Up Stand Up, Strange Fruit, Biko, Living for the City, etc., etc.

Even after some thought, I probably wouldn't have a great answer. Would be interested to hear what some hardcore fans think.

Also, not being religious, I miss a whole slew of P's messages in that area, but I do find the Deliverance EP touching, and it sure does hold my attention.

Papa grabs my attention, too.

On a side note, it was really something to learn how much Prince loved Suzanne Vega's Luka.

Some P lyrics with/thoughts messages that mean a lot to me...

"No child is bad from the beginning
They only imitate their atmosphere"

"What if I filled ur eyes with tears
So many that U cannot see...
What if I told U that U're worth
Only half of what U b...
What distortion could U let ur pen 4get 2day?
What misfortune left ur heart so broken U only say
Words intended 2 belittle or dismay?"

The songs Dreamer and Sacrifice of Victor are really impressive.

As mentioned before, I like Baltimore better than many. I think it's really good.

Here's the song with video:

https://youtu.be/hMLI7LFf84w

Do have some complaints, e.g. thought Ronnie Talk to Russia lyrics were really bad.

Do you like any of Prince's message/political songs?

Agree it's a challenge to select which songs get included in a showcase of Prince's talents/range for each decade. I owe an apology to the OP's as I didn't follow the directions and avoided the challenge, choosing instead to simply add some songs for consideration to the list of those songs already mentioned.

It might be easier if we were doing this showcase for a particular person we knew. Many of us would probably make our picks with that person's musical tastes in mind.

How would you find the challenge of making Prince music showcase(s) for your favorite decades or time periods?

Since there are threads for the '90s and the oughts, here's one for the twenty-teens (I'm a completist).

Songs from 2010 through 2016:

  • Lavaux
  • Laydown
  • Indifference
  • Breakfast Can Wait (Expresso Mix)
  • The Gold Standard
  • U Know
  • This Could B Us (AOA version)
  • Way Back Home
  • Time
  • Like a Mack
  • X's Face
  • Rock N Roll Love Affair (HNR 2 version)
  • Look at Me, Look at U
  • Stare
  • Xtralovable (HNR 2/horn version)
  • When She Comes
  • Black Muse
  • Big City

That's a pretty good list right there. I'd make a few deletions struckthrough and additions in bold.

  • Lavaux
  • Laydown
  • Indifference
  • Breakfast Can Wait (Expresso Mix)
  • The Gold Standard
  • U Know
  • This Could B Us (AOA version) (HNR1 version)
  • Way Back Home
  • Time
  • Like a Mack
  • X's Face (this shoujld be the first song on the mix, very cool opener)
  • Rock N Roll Love Affair (HNR 2 version)
  • Look at Me, Look at U
  • Stare
  • Xtralovable (HNR 2/horn version)
  • When She Comes
  • Black Muse
  • Revelation
  • 1000 Xs & Os
  • Big City

This is pretty good. But I would add Revelation, Look at Me Look at U, X's Face, Black Muse, and When She Comes. I still think it fits on 1 CD.

There are a few different ways you could approach a playlist that's intended to showcase Prince's talents to the uninitiated. Obviously you could try to impress them with songs that have significant artistic and/or technical merit, though there's a great deal of subjectivity in those measures.

What's always impressed me about Prince is his range. I tell people that I could play them 100 Prince songs back-to-back, and all of the songs would sound like they were made by a completely different artist. If I were to put a playlist together specifically to emphasis the eclectic nature of his catalogue, I would intentionally juxtipose songs with genres and styles light years apart. For instance, it might go something like this:

  • Venus de Milo
  • Bambi
  • Head
  • The Truth
  • Rainbow Children
  • Face Down
  • Colonised Mind
  • The Way Back Home
  • Adonis & Bathsheba
  • Dreamer
  • Condition of the Heart
  • The Undertaker

The dozen songs I just picked off the top of my head my night be his best, but I believe they effectively illustrate his range as an artist, especially when juxtiposed to each other.

RODSERLING

Frankly, the 2010 era was terrible in term of albums. I would even say 2007/2016, but that's not the topic here.
.
I like 2010 for the Price (3.4€), but it was sold in only 5 countries and really feel like " This is a for-free album, so I don't care". By far the best song on it is an hidden track! Lousy Concepts inside other lousy concepts...
.
Then came, after a welcomed 4 years of absence ( or 8 years since 3121 was his last album in traditional stores), two average albums with again lousy concepts ( Plectrum Electrum was labelled as a rock album when half the songs are not).
.
Why not make it the best tracks of both albums into only one, to make it just...a good album?
.
The Hit and run albums were a joke too. You make a follow-up to an album ( as McCartney 3 lately) when the first album was a commercial success and, or at least, a critical acclaim.
Hit n Run was neither of the two. It sold 17.000 copies worldwide the week of release and was dissed by the critics and by the fans as his worst non instrumental album ever.
.
But then, he releases the follow-up just months after. While there are good songs on it, there was clearly a lack of coherence and editing in the umpalatable tracklist, with songs that were already released years beforebefore, a strange order of the songs...( worst openers ever).
.
Why didn't he chose the best tracks out of the 2 Hitnrun, to try to make it the best album possible?
.

Agree with rod
Hit n run is one side prince trying to sound like an American bar room band.
The other side is prince trying to compete with Katy Perry and other artists 30 years younger.
Embarrassing.

I def think theres some good songs in this period but some of the lists I'm seeing seem to barely leave any songs from this decade out lol

Could you explain what you think is good or what you like about Baltimore?

I miss a lot of the religious messages too. Might be why I dont totally get 7.

The political or social message type songs I like are SOTT , money dont matter and maybe thats it?
Musically I love free, America, ronnie talk to Russia, though not sure of the politics.
Act of God isnt bad.
Tbh, and maybe I'm being unfair but I never really found much conviction in princes later political songs.
To me, the racial politics in his music was literally IN the music
What he played and how he wanted to be seen as a black artist outside of traditional black genres, that was political.
So black muse, avalanche, or even family name (I prob like FN most as a song), theres something missing for me.
Princes political worldview was never that coherent or well formed in my view. It's not like gil Scot heron, or curtis Mayfield, or sly stone even, or George Clinton. Or going younger, d'angelo (devils pie or charade).
With them , you knew who they were, with prince I felt like he was trying to be something he wasnt, ie a radical politico. He was a radical thinker in other ways like his ideas on distribution, musical segregation, touring, etc. But not much beyond that.
or maybe i just dont want to see prince as that kind of figure? i have other people for that already.

Rnr love affair has a little take me with u type melody running through it

Going through these tracks i noticed that for me at least while hearing prince play guitar or knock out a straight up no frills rocker like screwdriver is ok, as he got older his faster, harder and funkier songs no longer cut it for me. I preferred his more melodic, mellower songs.

screwdriver, wow, etc, all cheesy AF

so ok, walk in sand might sound like a tampon commercial

but these other songs, supposedly less corny, sound like beer commercials.

anyway, its wrong. if it does sound like a tampon commercial, well hey, let me buy some good tampons.
