Has having listened to all the bootlegged tracks spoiled the SOT SDE experience? After checking out the tracklist prior to the release of this great collection of songs. I became aware that there were lots of songs that I'd already heard. So I immediately started counting how many were not in circulation as far as I knew. I was hopeful that among those unheard songs a sizeable number could turn out to be revelations. Well, that hasn't exactly happened for me. I think that If I hadn't listened to all those leaked tracks, maybe I would have appreciated the set even more. While many of the well-known bootlegs live up to the quality of what ended up on the album, the others, in my opinion sound like throwaways. What are the chances of being surprised in the future? How much is not out there?

I get what your saying.Times like these I wish I haven't ever discovered prince's unreleased music BUT it is nice to have these tracks the way they were meant to be heard and in great quality.
As far as the future goes, outtakes pretty much stopped circulating around 1998 didn't they? So that means there is A great amount of material we haven't heard. From 1998-2016.outtakes from rainbow children,3121,etc. I have high Hopes for the rest of the estates releases. Plus we got a great concert dvd to go with it this time [Edited 11/13/20 19:14pm]

It didn't spoil it but obviously the set would have a bigger impact on me if for instance I have never heard All My Dreams,Adonis and Bathsheba, Large Room etc. There was still plenty of stuff that was new to me. When The Dawn, Walkin in Glory, There is Something I like and getting to hear the full Cosmic Day. One of my favourite periods is 2006-2009. 3121 and Lotus Flower albums are among my favourites so hopefully there is enough material in the Vault from that time period to make a similar set that would be full of totally unheard material.

Everything was new to me besides All My Dreams.

I had heard many of the songs before on various boots without knowing which period most were from. On the SDE they are in context and I am able to appreciate them better.

I definitely don't regret listening to the tracks on bootleg. I don't think it spoiled listening to it. There was still quite a bit I hadn't heard. Only just now backing away from listening to large chunks of it every day - it's great.

The opposite! Having previously experienced more data points in the huge set of recordings, I feel my knowledge is expanded and I have fresh questions, which translates as more fun, and a cheeky sense that It understand these songs better than those who only have this SDE. I might still skip songs that I thought were skip-able 10 years ago, so I guess I’m getting less value from the new set in that sense. But what I have learned in my bootleg journey enriches my enjoyment of most of this SDE, whether the new versions are alternate variants (awesome!) and just sonic improvements (also awesome!). I may have pre-enjoyed many of the ‘Shit! that’s incredible, why did he not release this!’ moments over the past 30 years or so, but those moments brought me huge happiness, distributed throughout my lifetime. I wouldn’t trade them for one massive orgasm in 2020, and I’m not sure I’d have a full sense of that climax without have enjoyed the foreplay.

Exactly, my point. I dont know how many times I have spun Big Tall Wall, All My Dreams, Witness, Rebirth and in IALRWNL. And all of the them in pretty good quality. These two you mentioned are the standouts for me. Although I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by DP with horns. What I do appreciate is being able to hear Wally in great quality and the original album is sounds so much louder and richer.

I think I heard about 1/2 to 2/3 of what was on SOTT:SDE before, but it was either in horrible quality or snippets.

Quite the opposite. If anything it's added to it.

Not at all. | |

...and thanks to the magic of bootlegs we know who the narrator of the Cocoa Boys story is and how it ended the first time

No. Bootlegged tracks gave me years of (early) enjoyment. The SDE released provided clear sounding audio, slightly different mixes, etc. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Nope. I could die tomorrow so I wanna hear everything he put to the mic as long as I have ears. Def enjoyed listening to new mixes and better quality the way HE intended and not demo versions. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

It didn't necessarily spoil the experience, but I've listened to the set less overall because of it. And realised I essentially paid around £80 for an over-sized book and DVD, subtracting the approximate value of the CDs, the full contents of which are freely available on YouTube for no charge whatsoever. I understand the need to provide premium box-set content on streaming services and I listen to SOTT SDE on Tidal myself for convenience, but the ENTIRE set being available on YouTube, including even the concert from the DVD (for two weeks) does cheapen the experience. Premium means exclusivity, otherwise it doesn't really mean shit. Returning to your question, in some cases I've been glad I've listened to the bootleg versions as the Bolas mixes in particular are terrible and not at all in line with Prince's production values or style.

There was definitely a bit of a trade-off. I really didn't know much about his bootlegs until I discovered this site within a few days of his death. The first two years after that brought so much joy and excitement as I got my hands on a variety of bootleg material in a rather piecemeal fashion, It perhaps was my favorite thing I have ever done in listening to music, with each new discovery filling me with admiration for Prince as well as the shear fun of making a few dozen playlists of the material. The experience was also be mixed with some grief about what we all lost. So, listening to SOTT SDE can't compete with the process above, but I still enjoy it. Like some othere have said, I don't listen to it as much as I would if it all was entirely new to me. However, I am really glad to have it. Also, I certainly don't regret the bootleg experience for a minute. Nothing Can Compare...

that's why I hadn't listen. Xmas came early. enjoying these surprises

Not in the least. Bootlegs are what kept me into Prince during times it was hard to be fan. At points when I did not like what he was putting out at the time I could always lean on boots from other periods. I'm not taking anything away from him. He's a legend. But for people to say they love everything he put out throughout his long career is ridiculoius.
If it were not for a really impressive bootleg catalog I would have left a long time ago.

I would definitely have enjoyed the SOTT SDE more if I hadn't already heard 2/3 of the songs on bootlegs. But still enjoy the set and very happy to have lots of the tracks in good quality now and there was a few great songs I hadn't heard before Anyway, I think chances of being surprised are when they start releasing post-1995 vault material. I hate the chewed tape on Wally!!!! Just wanted to get that off my chest.

Everything is new and a treasure to me, I've just heard before Large Room, Wally, Adonis, Witness, A Place and I thinks that's it, so it's great to discover this amount of material.

It IS irritating, especially when it's not on the boot version. "I like to watch."

For me, it was a little anticlimactic, but hearing much beloved boots now in studio quality is very satisfying. Especially Large Room. "I like to watch."

- That. Plus the remastered, much better sound quality. And the chronological thing. And the fact we're able to relive the 1986-1987 vibe. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Me too. There was nothing more exciting in my life than getting bootlegged songs like Witness 4 the Prosecution, A Place in Heaven (Prince vocal), All My Dreams, Welcome 2 the Rat Race (as I thought it was called) etc in 1990. A lot of these songs are still my favourites, and I've been listening to them for 30 years instead of just hearing them for the first time. Lots of these I haven't heard (When the Dawn of the Morning Comes, Love and Sex, There's Something I like About Being Your Fool etc), so it's amazing, lots to learn and enjoy. But back then I was completely obsessed and so hearing unreleased songs then--I just can't explain the pure joy they gave me! The year is 2020 and there's no more fear.
