Yes, 1999, not to mention Temptation. The so-called "Darth Vader voice" is actually the voice George Clinton used pre-Star Wars on the Standing on the Verge of Getting It On tracks "Red Hot Momma" and "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" which pontificates in a manner similar to TRC and seems an obvious influence; seeing as how much Prince liked paying respect to Funkadelic and pitch adjusting, I've never thought it was all that radical of him and don't understand the hatred from fans. It was obviously a deliberate aesthetic choice, done the way Prince wanted it.

I always thought of it as a homage to Clinton.

if eye had it on record i would hit the speed change button right when double speed playhouse makes the call and listen to the song as prince intended ..

Yeah, and that was Tora Tora. He used it on the radio show he did in April 1995 on BBC1. The audio from that ended up one of my favorite boots, Hallowed B Thy Name, which was mainly a Gold aftershow in Brussels, and a couple of songs from The White Room. I went back a few years ago and put the full versions of the songs into that radio show, so it's closer to 40 minutes or more now. But yeah, he did the show as Tora Tora in that manipulated voice.

You could say that the Camille voice started here too, as he says "play my records double-speed . . ."
