I would say a true fan is someone who likes a album besides purple rain and can name 10 prince songs that aren't on the radio

To me there is no such thing as a "true" fan, just fans who may like different elements of the same artist

Yes.

Those of us who are now around 50 years old witnessed the beginning and evolution. We lived through the movies (good and bad), through the WB battle and through it all bought all the albums, singles, side projects, etc. Sometimes on LP then cassette then CD. We were paying NPGMC and LotusFlow3r members.

Through that wide-angle lens of following him for decades (for me, since 1983), you can see a gradual decline in . . . something. It's not to say that the later stuff isn't good, but it's not otherworldly like the 80s and half of the 90s.

So if I don't like most of Newpower Soul, MPLSound or PlectrumElectrum, that doesn't at all negate me being a true fan. It makes me a true fan that I bought them and gave them true consideration.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, other worldly is a good description.

I guess the reason I made this post was I was thinking of making a playlist of the best post 96 songs but didnt know if I really wanted to sift through those npgmc compilations....

Spot on, I bought them til the end and regretted it sometimes but, there was usually a nuget somewhere.

A true fan is allowed to have preferences.

A stan will blindly love everything.

i became a real fan in 1990 but now, listening back to the stuff i bought on the day they came out, i can see why they arent quite as special as what came out in the 80s. theres a lot of stuff i like that came out in the 90s and 00s and 10s, but overall, i would say im not the biggest fan of a lot of the later stuff. its often with reservations.

im sure im not the only one.

but does that mean im not really a true prince fan?

[Edited 11/2/20 2:23am]

I've always wondered this about myself. I think I like about 25 Prince singles. My favorite Prince songs are usually the ones never released as singles.

If I feel someone wants to discover Prince but not really "invest" too much, I point them to The Hits/B-Sides set. Everything the casual+ listener needs is on there.

I consider myself one of the few true fans. I have all 9 of Prince's albums and saw him in concert twice.

Years ago, I thought no way, but his catalogue is so diverse and large that I can’t possibly be into every single thing. For the longest time I didn’t know much about his 90s work and didn’t care for it like his 70s and 80s output, but I eventually gave it a chance and found some gems. I love songs like gold, my name is prince, gett off, etc. So yes I do get to call myself a fan

I once met a feller who called himself a true Prince fan. He could sing along to every word on PlectrumElectrum and had every studio album title tattooed on his back. But when he took off his shirt and I had a good look I noticed he didn’t have New Power Soul on there. I told him a true fan would have known to include it and he was, in fact, a bum and a Prince tourist.

Surely, every true Prince fan knows that 'New Power Soul' isn't the name of a studio album - but 'Newpower Soul' is?

Good on both of you. Both comments have me cracking up.

Excellent advice.
I would add that if you really want that SDE, find those money vacuums in your life (spouse, kids, elderly family members) and hit ELIMINATE
do without your mobile phone for a month or three
Get rid of that broadband
Eat less
Go out less
Stop hitting the gym.

People today dint know how to prioritize or sacrifice

You re right for sure.
I advise every fans to offer it to their wife or kids ( or both) for their Christmas.
Could be a great idea.
.
My 23 months old son love to play with it, pick up one of the disc, play it on the Hi-fi ( yes he can do that since he can walk), dance to it, then tidy up The CD, and leaf through the pages of that 60$ book ( maybe he s looking for the Lyrics of It s Be Like That Sometimes?).
I m sadly serious.
.
He literally fell in love with The Versace Experience last year ( the object, not the music). If the estate wants to know how to sell their albums by millions, they can contact me, my son will show them how Prince albums are wonderful toys.

The way to do it is buy every format for every member of the family.

That way you can get the whole set and look generous at the same time.

People like what they like. I've been a proud supporter buying every official release, being a member of his clubs over the years, traveled to tour the museum, etc. However, I don't like everything he put out and I doubt anyone really does. That does not make me or anyone else a lesser fan.
