Prince was coming with the heat in 2015...

The EDM stuff was good for what it was, then Prince dropped Free Urself and then If Eye Could Get Ur Attention (and then HitNRun Phase Two)

But it still amazes me that he released a newly recorded (i think 2014) version of a song officially he gave to Taja — then there are the unreleased leaks (wait, LEAK? What’s a leak?! Never mind) with Jill Jones and Mayte...

Then of course there has to be an original-original (or hopefully they have found master tapes or at least a good quality cassette copy)

It’s one of those songs that he seemed to regularly come back to... I don’t think it was ever necessarily “unfinished”
But it’s a fun littly diddy and I think Prince just had fun with it up until the end... wrote it, tried out different prodigies including his first wife on the track, and years later out of the blue just re-records it with a killer but sweet bassline! (I think that was Andrew on the bass?...)

I’d love to hear the original and if there are other tracks he just later had fun with.... we know this was a theme in the later years with Xtraloveable and 1,000 Hugs n Kisses...

And Free Urself was used as a forthcoming album title on one promo video Prince released. I was hoping at the time that Phase 3 might be a nice retro electro-funk and soul collection. Maybe it was and will eventually be released.

But yes, it's a sparkling gem of a song.

I like ALL versions of this song. Taja's version is my favorite though. She also wrote the third verse in her version I am assuming as the other versions do not have it (..before i dry up and die 4 u baby...). Those tin drums are popping and have a great reverb effect on top. It is a simplistic melody, has a catchy pop chorus and well worthy of a single to me.

sadly.... lol ik Warner Bros just want to get their stuff out the way... but Sony or whomever in Estate should get on top of the 2000s and 2010s stuff... plan ahead. I'd like to see Josh ahead of those projects since he was working with Prince on many things around that time... though, hopefully he gets someone to do the proper mixing and mastering lol

and I just remembered about the "horns and strings" unreleased version that was on Blast From The Past 6

i can hear why he didn't release it, too much going on. But I love the arrangement... especially at 2:12 through 2:25

I wish there was a clearer version because the one i got is so distorted, compressed or one of the other

At the time, MBN came here to express his frustration at how poorly these new tracks with his work were mixed, and how it didn't reflect at all his or Prince's original intention.
