There's something about it that's so black it's like "How much more black could this be"? And the answer is none. None more black.

Beavis and butthead were right when they did commentary for the "When 2 R in love" video. They said it was a close up of princes butt

I haven't seen that. Will have to google it. Probably lots of people who wouldn't be mad at "close up of Prince's butt."

Also, wouldn't Beavis and Butthead be biased against songs with numbers in the title? IIRC, they aren't too fond of numbers. Too many of them and all that.

Well in that case, I may have to become a fan of theirs. biggrin

Haven't seen much of their stuff, never having cable and all. But these days, it's much easier to find things.

Thanks for the info!

So I didn't imagine this : there was indeed an official video for When 2 R in Love? Did it receive airplay on MTV ?

I had the same reaction and wondering.

From Prince Vault:

There are a few Org threads about this video, e.g.:

lol even more when I got a look at the video B+B were describing

Imagine searching eagerly for the fabled "close up of Prince's butt" video and realizing it is, per thread title, a screen nearly "all blackness."

Serves me right.

If the black album actually was released in 87 I dont really see it being big in clubs as planned.
Or am I wrong to think that?
The songs seem too fast compared to what was big in rnb at the time.
Which DJ would play cindy c or supeecalifrigasexy? Lol

Yep. Back in the day it was even announced and explaining there was nothing wrong with your television, and there wasn't a protest going on either... I remember some female VJ saying this IICC.

I was looking forward to see this video, as I read or heard somewhere he did it all black.

-

I remember very well that it indeed made you focus more on the song than anaything else.

(I have it somewhere still on VHS)

And with those lyrics, you could imagine your own video in your head.

Found it also very daring of both Prince, and MTV to make/broadcast this.

So that was in 1987 or 1994?
Amazing the video has even a director attached to it!
But why choosing a song already in Lovesexy instead of exclusive to TBA?

Don't have knowledge of what was happening in various club scenes.

But for me, I love Le Grind. Can't sit still when that song comes on. biggrin

However the video came into being in that form, my reaction is like yours. It is great for the song.

Maybe because I've had the song playing in my head for so many years, it feels to me that what goes on in each listeners head should be the (possibly more elaborate : ) ) video. Perhaps I underestimate the potential of a less spare official video, though. I don't know.

Also love that the video highlights the lyrics, but really wish it didn't have the mistakes. sad

Thanks for the info on how the video was presented on television. Do you remember whether this was at time of Lovesexy release or Black Album release?

I was talking about the video, but didn't look for it, since it wasn't on the official PrinceVevo.
.
I saw it on a french streaming service, Dailymotion, around 2005, but thought it was a fake or fanmade, and that it never aired officially.
.
I also thought it was logically from 1987 and not 1994.
Because why chosing as the "lead single/music video" a song already released on Lovesexy instead of an exclusive track from The Black Album?

Prince Vault has this listing:

Video Versions TitleLengthReleasedVersionAdditional info When 2 R In Love 0:46 Lovesexy Live 1 VHS Live 9 September 1988, Westfal...st Germany When 2 R In Love 1:28 Lovesexy Live 1 VHS Live Reprise; 9 September 1988, Westfal...st Germany When 2 R In Love 3:58 Promotional release only Promo video 1994 promo video to support “The Black Album”; see When 2 R In Love video for details

Unreleased Versions TitleVersionAdditional Info When 2 R In Love studio full version, over a minute longer with an extra verse

Point taken about When 2 Are in Love being an already-released song. Also agree with you that in general, Le Grind would have been good as one of the early songs featured in various ways.

On another subject, I wonder about that "extra" When 2 R in Love verse. Perhaps it's something already widely understood.

It's definitely Prince by the numbers.

I think Bob George is really the only song that covers new ground or even old ground in an interesting new way.
