Prince's freaky side only ever went on vacation. The Gold Standard lyrics are a far cry from the relgiious-zealot lyrics of 2001-2.

maybe, but i think the last decade or two were kind of conflicted between the two sides. i dont think his freaky side ever really came back properly, or he couldnt really allow it to, so he would sort of nod to it, but never really let it through completely.

Prince always had secular and sexual elements in his music. I think he found sex as a gift from God, hence his expression of spiritual love "Lovesexy" , the love song in Purple Rain being "God" , the sensuality and allegory for a perfect soul mate (literally represented in the Bilble with Eve made for Adam from his rib) in "God created woman" Rainbow children had the graphic "Mellow" mentioning foreplay and female arousal. "Adore" mentions angels witnessing Prince making love with his paramour.

Though Prince did some amazing things with religious music - "Deliverance" ep is on point, Rainbow Children and Lovesexy, I don't believe he could ever leave the secular world or sexuality. I feel Prince felt their was some complex overlay or matrix in terms of how the religious and secular world mixed (like nested tables) and aside I believe he was distancing himself from the Jehovah's Witness faith and exploring himself on a more personal level which was manifested within the Piano and Microphone concerts as well as the autobiography.

I Prince liked to tease us with his sexy stuff on stage. He was more mature but is slipped out.

I think he largely recovered from his traumatic years where he seemed to need a religion with 'all the answers'.

He stayed a bit subversive. I could tell by the interview with Dan P.

Prince was freaky even in his most "religious" moments/albums. Consider: The Rainbow Children album featured the lyrics "wet circles round the toy, while you bring urself 2 joy...."

My opinion, Prince would have always been some version of unhappy until he was able to humble himself. But he was incapable of that. He was big on the idea of playing the rock star and had (a justified) high view of his work and place in history.

in fairness, he wasnt the only artist to have this problem/conflict

with prince though i think he just never got that comfortable sexing it up again after the early 00s, it was always a bit reserved, or like he was just going over the old routines again

and thats fine, hes a much older man, i wouldnt expect him to be doing head or sexuality into his late 50s and 60s

but it would have been good if he found a more comfortable middle ground - i guess he did, on the whole, but it often seemed like there were these moments where the cracks would show and either religious or sexual prince would seem like they were dying to creep out again lol

I'm sorry, but it's just not true. Only a person who didn't really listen too deeply into his recent stuff would think that he somehow became less sexual. What he stopped being was vulgar. And I should expect all of us to at some point give up the ghost and act our ages. Take a gander at Madonna to see how fuckin goofy it looks to be pulling the same stunts in your 60s that you did in your 20s. And since he no longer felt like he had to hide his religious beliefs at some point, that topic claimed some real estate in the spotlight. Listen to Rainbow Children - I would not say most of those songs are even about religion specifically. It's the idea of being devout to this system of beliefs that binds the concept album together. That album is as biographical and theological as it gets for Prince and it's still riddled with euphemisms and metaphors and direct references to sex. There's a whole fuckin song or three dedicated to just that.

i fully admit i kinda tuned out of princeworld (the new material that is, i still went to see him live when he was in london, but i had very little interest in 3rd eye girl music for instance, i plan on playing catch up soon) during his last decade or so.

and part of it was that his 'sexier' songs werent really cutting it anymore either, leading me to think he was at a kind of impasse. as i said elsewhere in this thread, it just sounded like something he knew the audience expectd, so he was dutifully doling it out, on order, it didnt seem to come from any place of genuine feeling.

implicit in my post, im actually wondering i suppose, i wouldnt have minded if prince went full on gospel, or full on religious as he got older. it might have felt more honest.

According to Prince the thing he enjoyed most as he aged was sleeping. Chronic pain and opioids will do that to a person, though.

Rainbow Children 2 was going to take him further in this direction. PP was going to host all out religious worship

There are probably a billion+ people who wish they were as unhappy as Prince. And religious people don't have to limit themselves to gospel songs.
