Would love to know! If I had to pick an absolute personal favorite, I'd go with your #1, but REALLY want to hear what PRINCE was most proud of.

Astasheiks, what would you have guessed? I o realize you probably heard the answer before considering the question.

Are you surprised at all that Prince didn't use his genius with words more in taking on the rise of hip hop? As one example, is it surprising he didn't write and speak more of his own raps? Or maybe he did and I'm clueless.

Do realize that there's a lot more to hip hop than what asked about.

being a great lyricist doesnt always equate to being a good rapper/MC...he never mastered the art of "flow" as a rapper...his flow was always dated and/or forced and monotone, and his delivery never conveyed the true essence of hiphop... its ironic that he seemed to finally catch the wave as an older man in 2014, on "U Know"....he KILLT that shit...flow was current and unforced... joints like "Silicon", "My Medallion" and Y Should Eye do That When Eye Can Do This?" are solid attempts but sound like they were released 10-15 years too late...main problem was Prince was about 10 years too old to really relate to hiphop, especially since there was no real hiphop scene in the twin cities until recently...being born in 1958 and growing up in Minneapolis were the main obstacles to P's rapping skills on the mic...but if he had grown up in New York or Philly maybe ten years later, he would have been a masterful MC with his innate rhythm and lyrical wordsmithery

I would have probably guess his Singing or Guitar playing. Which is not what he told Morris. And you are right on your last sentence.

his main issue, and the problem with fans asking why he didnt do better with it, or how he could have done better with it, is why should he have done it? prince just thought he could do everything, and do it better, but with hip hop, he just should have stood down, and stopped himself. the simple fact is just that no one wants to hear prince rapping. no one. irrestible bitch, yes, but beyond that, no thank you.

its like asking if anyone wants to hear chuck d singing. no they really do not.

george clinton found a way of working with rappers. he could do his spoken word type thing. prince never figured out a comfortable way to do it. and 95% of the time, it was cringey. did michael jackon try to rap? no. if prince had tried just once or twice, that would have been forgivable, but he just never stopped!

I hear you. You make great points! Goodness knows a person shoulnd't have to, or even try to, do everything. With Prince, it's partly that he did SO many things in such a gifted way that it's tempting to ask. But there still obviously were areas where he didn't get all rave reviews. Directing movies, for example.

The other day, I was reading somebody's account of talking with P when P got on one of his rants about the state of music. He was talking about all the people making it huge, and all the while they can't sing, can't play an instrument, but they sure can sample other artists.

That's when Prince's way with with words, in particular, came to mind. It seemed to me that being poetic, sometimes wickedly so, could speak loudly to that music scene that could, from a superficial point of view, seem a lot about speaking loudly. Of course, the scene was about way more than that, and my idea was oversimple.

All this just to say that it my thoughts came from thinking of P's way with words, an area where he was hugely talented, as opposed to thinking about some random area.

I think I'm one of the few that, by and large, enjoy Prince's endeavors into rap. At least when it was him and not Tony M doing it. He put his own spin and style on it and usually backed it up with a real band/real music.
