I love both these albums
In fact in 1987 I was 15 and the Joshua Tree was played over and over and over...I loved it.

It was prince who? For me then, my tastes have changed a lot.
Back then, duran duran, Pet shop boys, aha and U2 were top of my list.

One question, I wonder if there is a U2 forum, discussing what should and should not should be on the SDE?
Plus, the Joshua Tree 'vault tracks are not quite in the same league right?

Love both albums as well as someone who was a teen back then too. But always been a Prince fan first. Love those other artists you mentioned plus Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Tears for Fears—-love 80s music in general lol.

I love MJ but I just can't seriously compare Thriller to Purple Rain or 1999. The songs just aren't interesting enough. Prince just seems to be on another level of creativity and craftsmanship. I just think of songs like All the Critics, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry... it's just so far ahead of the level MJ was at that it seems silly to even compare. Still Don't Stop Til, Rock with you, baby be mine etc are all time jams.

You're right. I do agree with you.

(I shouldn't have asked the question in the first place. wink)

Just wanted to point out that ''Purple Rain'' as a superstar album in 1984, proved that the general audience was capable to receive a new and daring sound with edgy and rawer songs, so to speak, with daring lyrics and musical directions, driven by images through stunning live performances and looks and most important, the movie...

''Thirller'' on the other hand, another great superstar album, was thè perfect ready made sing-a-long pop album, unique in it's kind too, accesable to all, a stunning album driven by the image of video clips & short movies...

The only thing I 'feel' about both albums, is that Prince's ''PR'' album, is an album with a concept and story from beginning to end. ''Thriller'' suits more like a greatest hits, already when it was released. You can switch all tracks and it still remains that sort of greatest hits album i believe.

Same goes for the ''Sign O The Times'' album. You barely can't stirr it, switch it, change it imho.

It's 'baked' in my brain the way it is made.

I kind of have difficulties listening to the Crystal Ball and Dream Factory albums, due to the perfectness of this 'conceptual compilation', which in fact it is; a (perfect, but) compilation.

Prince, still so terribly underrated.😞

Yes, according to all of us here on the org, the list should have at least:

1999

Purple Rain

Parade

SOTT

Lovesexy

and then, who cares who gets the other 5 spots in the top 10 (of course, positions 6-10)

lol

I'm a firm believer that PR wouldn't exist if it weren't for Thriller. PR built upon the foundation that album laid and did so in many its own ways much like how Thriller set the base.
