is it me or is controversy weirdly sequenced?

this album has a lot of good stuff on it, but i find the order of songs a bit weird. ending with jack u off is also just a bit weird. i think if this was sequenced a bit differently, critics might have felt less like it was inconsistent or a bit too all over the place (in this sense, its actually the first proper 'prince' album, i.e. an album that goes everywhere rather than try to sound cohesive). having do me baby as the 3rd song sapped the energy in my view.

id have done it like this -
controversy
sexuality
jack u off
annie christian
ronnie talk to russia

private joy
lets work
do me baby

I think they are sequenced appropriately. Do you have any particular albums in mind.

dodger

Most have the pattern of start with a bang, third track a ballad and finish with a statement/anthem

Controversy
ATWIAD
These were the ones I thought of mainly
But I always thought SOTT was a bit oddly ordered
Lovesexy too in a way

Come could be better

I'd personally have ordered emancipation according to style/theme rather than make each disc a big eclectic showcase

Crystal ball was a mess

For the earlier albums it helps to remember they were sequences for vinyl, so songs are grouped together to be a "side".

Dodger that's standard sequencing same as concerts. Start powerful for a grand entrance, slow it down around song 3 and finish with a message.thats why PR is last on the album and often the finale in concerts.

Controversy is too short.
It deserved one more track.

Leaving them wanting more is better than giving them too much.

Crystal Ball the official "bootleg" release in 1998? I think the first two discs flow well, but not a fan of the third disc.

The entire, "let's go through multiple eclectic genres and odd things as if bands are switching personas" is as old as The Beatles with Sgt. Pepper.

With the controversy album the only change I'd make is put Do Me Baby last, it definitely should be the closing song.

I love Side Two,it's very interesting. There's a sexual song ("Private Joy"),followed by a political song ("Ronnie,Talk 2 Russia"),another sexual song ("Let's Work"),a political song ("Annie Christian"),followed by another sexaul song ("Jack U Off") lol

I know. I was answering the OP’s question about Prince sequencing albums weirdly

Controversy is sequeneced for vinyl, side 1 shows the three different sides to him for the unconverted (put very loosely: the funk star, the new wave rocker, the balladeer, each with their own Prince-twist); side 2 is for the converted, a sequence of ideas that all run into each other, ending with a kiss off song to wrap it all up.

This.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Nah, that doesn't work. You have five funk/rock tracks that don't fit on one side of an LP and three tracks that aren't enough to fill one side of an LP.
The sequencing of the album is, in fact, pretty good. The first side is fantastic. Two great funk tracks, one great ballad. The other side opens with a great pop tune and then goes on with a funk jam. And after that comes the freaky stuff. I do, however, agree that the second side with all the freaky stuff isn't as great as the first side.

If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Maybe it is weirdly sequenced, but it does come with a happy ending.

In May 2011 Boris Fishpaw replied in this thread https://prince.org/msg/7/...g_8236716:

The title track is as awesome now as it ever was. However, the album is somewhat flawed IMO.

Even though it contains some much stronger material, it doesn't hang together as 'an album' as well as Dirty Mind does. It was the first Prince album that I thought contained some filler and the sequencing wasn't as good as it could've been.

I'm quite surprised that langebleu doesn't remember this.

This & "intro to new fans" comps "limited" to 90 tracks.

There was a great thread a few years back called something like "What are your top 30 favourite songs by the Time" where every response was "Do the Time have 30 tracks?"

Anyway, despite Controversy clearly being very carefulyl sequenced I do agree that it's an awkward listen, side 1 is a bit like a side of 1999 while side 2 is like a side of Parade.

Side A: Original Album + 12'' Singles.

Side B: All Vault trax '86-87.

I LOVE Controversy. He had a lot going on there.

.

I too think it was too short, it moved very fast

.

Tick Tick Bang, I think is a song that feels very 'controversial' and could work

Most of the other songs are too 'simply' relationship songs, with no controversial edge like Private Joy and Do Me Baby

.

And he should have released more B sides. The one released is also forgetable to me. Gotta Stop (Messin' About)

.

The 'outtakes' we(I) haven't heard Rain/The Rain and U, Make U Mine, Heart Attack, Hump U, Lisa, Friction, Broken, Delivery Boy

Thats a good point. Considering the title, a few more wtf moments needed to be on there. But theccontroversy wasnt meant to be in the songs, it was just prince talking about perceptions of himself. The start of his self awareness maybe
