A Dream Factory playlist without SOTT tracks I'm putting together a hybrid version of the Dream Factory album that incorporates tracks from all 3 known configurations, but omits tracks that were released in some form on SOTT (even alternate versions). Here's my tracklist and sources:
Thoughts?

This would have been his best album... Add Wally and yeah... his best album.... (or include Wally on an alternate late 80s album and... yeah... second best album lol)

- Love it. Great idea. - My choice of order :
1. Crystal Ball ... 10. Nevaeh Ni Acalp A (...but in the correct reversed position. It's such a great little song when you hear it the normal way. Wonderful and heavenly sung. Leave the title backwards though) ... 16. A Place In Heaven (Lisa Vocal) ( SOTT Deluxe) 17. Wally (SOTT Deluxe) 18. All My Dreams (SOTT Deluxe) 19. Power fantastic. - [Edited 10/2/20 22:53pm] "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I’d either place it before In A Large Room (i think it sounds damn good back to back) OR.... Take out Last Heart (because meh... i mean its a nice little diddy but not complete)... and place it inbetween Witness and Movie Starr Because Wally is all about a man hiding his pain but his pain overwhelms his ass, then Movie Starr is almost like the next night, the next week, he’s in a better mood and got most of the tears out the way and so he can hide that pain there... but in context of the album, behind all the laughter and the fun of being some big ‘movie star,’ we know the pain is still there... he’s having fun but hasn’t found peace within himself which the next track “A Place In Heaven” comes in

It's so hard for me to not put Strange Relationship in every playlist.

I did this years ago and still listen to it to this day. I actually burned a CD with artwork and everything. The only difference is I don’t have Big Tall Wall on it and I included the W&L version of Strange Relationship and Ballad of Dorothy Parker cause it just fits and it’s one of my all time faves. But otherwise it mirrors this track list.

I've compiled two albums to bookend SOTT as we know it: a single disc version of Dream Factory, and a single disc called Crystal Ball (comprised of the tracks that were cut to make SOTT):

Posted this elsewhere. Think it works really well. The transition from Visions to Dream Factory is a bit abrupt but that's a minor quibble. First thing I did was to make a playlist with all the songs from the various configs of Dream Factory that didn't make it onto SOTT, preserving the track sequences as much as possible. The ones in bold are from Crystal Ball 98 and Power Fantastic is from The Hits. Visions Dream Factory Train Wonderful Day Big Tall Wall And That Says What? Teacher, Teacher Colors In A Large Room With No Light Neveah Ni Ecalp A Sexual Suicide Crystal Ball Power Fantastic Last Heart Witness 4 the Prosecution Movie Star A Place In Heaven All My Dreams

Since the CB98 tracks are on... CB98, I see no reason to include them any more than the songs on SOTT. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Yeah I mean yeah if you follow this reasoning then OK. I mean any reasoning can be followed. We could also have a CB86 tracklist of the songs that didn't make to to SOTT, then A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Always thought the June track list with the Movie Star to Place in Heaven transition uses the Prince vocals. Was it supposed to be Lisa’s version(which I prefer anyway)? What missing note in Visions??

What missing note in Visions?? Yes, Movie Star segues into Lisa vocal APIH. The very first note in Visions is clipped on SOTT SDE so you only get the decay. Really odd choice.

I ripped my vinyl copy of the deluxe set to FLAC and Visions is intact.
So maybe you have a bad rip?

I'm in the process of doing this kind of thing myself.... though I have to say it makes no sense to me to choose bootlegs over CB98 tracks just because their volume is loud. This is why I don't do playlists, I always make/edit albums together. And my rip of my CB98 CDs aren't too loud, because I reduced the volume on the ripped tracks. Why would anyone not do that? I'm not trying to be a dick, it just seems like an obvious solution. And although the mastering on the CB98 tracks is criminally awful (thanks Prince!), they still sound better than the boots.

So maybe you have a bad rip? Yeah the digital download I got from WB has it intact as well.

You can just turn the gain down on Crystal Ball to match other levels if you are exporting a file. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Are you using the version of Crystal Ball without the intro and orchestration? The one with Clare Fischer's strings didn't appear until the Crystal Ball album.

I have been listening to the set in the order it was released but decided today to have a go at Dream Factory and Crucial bootleg inspired playlist. I came up with the following. Where I used the crystal ball 98 versions I lowered the volume on the tracks to match the Sign sde volumes. Neaveh Ni Eclap A Dream Factory (cb 98) Wonderful Day (shorter version) Teacher Teacher Train It Ain't Over Til The Fat Lady Sings Eggplant (prince vocal) Everybody Wants What They Don't Got Big Tall Wall And That Says What In A Large Room With No Light Sexual Suicide (cb 98) Crystal Ball (first version without Stings) Power Fantastic (b sides version) Crucial (sign sde version) Can I Play With U? Wally Last Heart (cb 98) Witness 4 The Prosecution 1 (sign sde version) Movie Star (box of Chocs version) A Place In Heaven (prince vocal) All My Dreams.

Wally was about his break up with Susannah and the Revolution overall. So it might not have been created, if Dream Factory Prince & the Revolution continued

Would the Coco Boys project and the Dawn movie have happened if Prince & the Revolution Dream Factory 1987 happened?

Do we have any actual evidence that this was even a real album and not just an idea that quickly faded but has gained traction due to fans journalists and Revolution band members? I’ve never seen a cassette or test pressing of DF.

We have a hand-written tracklist by Susan Rogers at the time but even that was probably an idea for all of 10 minutes. Any kind of finished tracklist is speculation, mix and match as you see fit, that's sure as hell what I do.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That’s what I meant. Outside of that one from Susan, Dream Factory was never a test pressed album or a cassette tape sequence. There’s no evidence at all of it other than that Susan Rogers handwritten track list but that’s common for him to draw up or write up such a thing. This myth is being promoted heavily by journalists, the estate and even fans. He was highly productive and prolific during this time and recorded a lot but never made a planned album. Between promoting the movie promoting parade rehearsing and recording he never even mentioned a new prince and the Revolution album following parade as far as I know.

Where do the other alleged configurations even come from? I’ve only considered Susan Rogers handwritten note the only known track listing. I like the album but ain’t no hits on it. Definitely more of his avant-garde stuff. Cool but not for me. One album of that was enough

This is true, but we also know that he was working on lots and lots of new stuff with the Revolution over a long period before they split up, and that he altered quite a few tracks after this point. How far along they were in approaching a complete album is unknown, including your idea that there was no plan for an album, but certainly they had enough close to finished tracks for several albums. Pretty sure everyone in the Revolution has said they never heard of a Dream Factory album until years later, so you can call it what you like as well [Edited 10/9/20 9:26am]
