This is pure trash. In April 2016 he said he had not talked to Prince in years.

^Why, Penny? I think you would like this book. I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while..I think Neal is a good writer. He seems earnest and seems to genuinely love/respect Prince. I’m actually watching a livestream Q&A with him now on YouTube. I just ordered the book.

I've read some more on it, and I thought I might end up liking it too. I just didn't like the preview at the link above. I'll add this one to my list.

You're the second person here saying he's lying. I haven't heard about neal karlen up until now, why is he lying? I'm genuinely interested

Good grief. Neal Karlen is a reputable journalist who had a long history covering Prince. His is a book I will definitely read.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This article is GREAT. And so real.

Back in 1985, we kept on repeating "Mamma jamma" after it appeared in the quote in the interview. I remember riding a bike to a friend's house to read that interview (he had a subscription to Rolling Stone)

And I was just listening to the Barnaby jones theme... no kidding. I love old TV themes. That was a show my parents would watch when I was a toddler/kid. I always wondered if Prince would ever cover the theme to "The Street of San Francisco". Take a listen. The horns. The guitar.

I think this article reads like a poem. That conclusion is powerful.

Not to be a 'killjoy' but did Prince really call Neal in March 2016?

Did Neal really talk to Andre?? Could Andre reel off those shows 30 years later?

I remember watching them too but Barnaby Jones and Welcome Back Kotter would not

have been easily retrievable from my memory.

I just hope he is not taking us on a bit of a ride. Of course, some things will be true but

some of this may be embellishment.

Well, he did have 4 years to remember all this, talk with people, laugh and tell old stories. Yeah, I think Neal is for real. I did the YouTube live thing last night and it was awesome-- in its unique way. Neal is so earnest, so caught up in his feelings. Like he said, never finishes a sentence, has six conversations at once. Very open boundaries. I get why Prince liked him. Neal strikes me as a guy you can shoot the intellectual shit with for hours.
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

That's true but I also hear he did very few interviews.

Neal you mean, or Prince? If you mean Neal, he's a little awkward in front of the camera. He's a writer not a public figure, so this is new for him.

If you mean Prince, yeah. Neal was one of the few people he granted interviews to. People are entitled to their own opinions, of course (and this being the Org, they'll be strong ones), but for me, if P trusted Neal, that's all I need to know.

I'd like it to be true as he is a clever writer...I am just not certain Prince called him in March 2016.

YES! to all of this. Love your description of his way with conversation.

Each person will make own judgment. Suggested on other thread, where some were asking who Neal is, that they can read some of his earlier articles and books. Should have also thought about interviews, etc. like the one you describe here. People can see what they think for themselves.

As for judgment about lies/truth, there are some things fans know directly, but a lot we simply don't know with "direct evidence" about lie vs. truth. If it's to be said about this book, it's to be said about most books.

I really enjoyed Mayte's book. I know that book said some things people didn't want to hear. Not wanting to hear something doesn't make it true or untrue. I'm one of those fans who has zero direct knowledge, but I appreciate these books.

As for talk of making money off of books, writing a book is not the thing to choose if the goal is big money.

No, I heard that Neal did not interview very many people for the book. I'll have to look for the source.

I don't have strong feelings either way.

Maybe because he recorded it without prince's knowledge? It's not okay just because prince was a famous person and neal is journalist. It's betraying ones trust at it's worst. If prince would've found out, what do you think he would've thought? Remember that big chick story?

Also, I wanna add, some associates have been dragged ad nauseam for far less than that.

Well that's interesting considering Prince didn't allow himself to be recorded. He should at least come clean and stop calling himself a friend.

.

https://nealkarlen.com/wp...E-1990.pdf

"Finally, there is one more philosophy unchanged with the years. "I play music," Prince has said. "I make records. I make movies. I don't do interviews." So what are we doing? "We're just talking" he says. Hence, his decision not to be taped or allow notes to be taken or even a pad of questions to be brought out. That would inhibit him, he says; that would mean doing the thing that he just doesn't do."

"And these letters he sent me after my Rolling Stone stories are my stocks and bonds... I'm waiting for him to die frankly, I am, because they're worth infinitely more... he is worth so much more than Bob Dylan, his signature. I was just at an autograph show and everyone was saying... 'wait 'til he dies'." - Neal Karlen, April 8, 2016

See? That´s what I was referring to on that other thread. Thanks to MoodyBlumes for posting that quote because I only paraphrased it.

Dude won´t get a penny from me, I don´t care if he´s got regrets.

And how is he supposed to know that Susannah Melvoin was the only strong woman Prince had a relationship with if they hadn´t spoken in a long time? That´s probably wishful thinking on his behalf.

I can´t stand that guy. We´ve had several threads about him and his behaviour a couple of years ago.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I'd be hard pressed to believe the interview if it wasn't in video.

Tamron Hall said in this interview - "In my life, the only other person I spoke with more than Prince is my mother. This is the person I communicate with more than anyone."

I doubt that vanity wasn't a strong person. She comes across as a head strong person from the stories I've read about her.

Also Mani, she has to be some sort of strong person to go through with the plan she had laid out.

I can't think of any woman in his camp that isn't strong in my eyes. Hell, I think you had to be strong to keep up with his personality.

Enjoyed the account of interview with Ms. Katherine Doepke, Prince's now 97-year-old high-school teacher for voice and piano.
