List of songs Prince offerered to other artists who declined to use them Hi
This originally appeared in another thread but I thought it's worth a thread in itself. . I thought it'd be funny if the estate managed to talk some artists into singing songs P offered them but they declined to use. Some are dead unfortunately, but it'd be cool to hear Martika's rendition of Open Book (she said she regretted not being allowed by her producers to record it at the time), Violent Femme's rendition of Wonderful Ass, Joni's rendition of Emotional Pump, etc. . So let's make a list of songs artists declined to use. I'd exclude songs considered for side projects, maybe, because the list then becomes endless, besides P often decided himself against using such or such song. So let's put aside stuff that was considered but not used for The Time, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Sheila E., The Family, Jill Jones, Madhouse, Eric Leeds, Ingrid Chavez and The NPG. . Out of memory: . DEAD: - James Brown: Chocolate (not sure if this one's confirmed because Princevault makes no mention of it and I don'tr ecall Duane addressing it either, but I remember it was reported in the 90's, maybe in Uptown Mag? It was offered to Brown in 1986 IIRC) - Joe Cocker: Old Friends 4 Sale - Michael Jackson: Wouldn't You love To Love Me - Miles Davis: Penetration, Jailbait and A Girl And Her Puppy (all 3 were recorded and are still in the WB vault, thx to olb99 for the info!) - Robert Palmer: Lust U Always - Tony LeMans: Fuschia Light (unclear whether Tony declined to use it or Prince took it back, but Tony recorded his vocals so it's there in the vault) . ALIVE: - Bonnie Raitt: I Need A Man, Jealous Girl, Promise 2 Be True and There’s Something I Like About Being Your Fool (Bonnie recorded vocals on all 4 so it's there in the vault) - Candy Dulfer: several unknown tracks for her 2nd album - Dale Bozzio: The Latest Fashion and 2nd Thoughts - Dolly Parton: Rescue Me (technically a cover, but P sent her his version of it, so...) (thanx to sovembol for reminding me) - George Clinton: My Pony - Joni Mitchel: Emotional Pump - Joyce Kennedy: Rough (thanx to Rioub for reminding me) - Kylie Minogue: Baby Doll (Harps mentioned Cruel Lover and Sex on Legs and I remember these titles being mentioned in Uptown Mg IIRC, but there's no mention of them on Pvault and the Baby Doll entry says it was the only song offered to Kylie) - Lindy Layton: I remember reading somewhere -I believe in Uptown Mag-, that a Prince original was to be included on her first album alongside her cover of Do Me, Baby, but when the album came out there was no new P song. No mention of it on Pvault, so IDK if it's confirmed. - Madonna: By Alien Means - Mazarati: Jerk Out - Martika: Open Book - Ophelie Winter: Le Garçon Plus Beau Dans L'Univers (French version of TMBGITW, that one was recorded so it's in the vault, not sure if he pulled it off or she did) - Patrice Rushen: I Wanna Be Your Lover (thanx to renfield for reminding me) - Taja Sevelle: Taja said Prince submitted 2 other songs for her first album, but she doesn't remember the titles - Tevin Campbell: Down and The P - The Bangles: Jealous Girl (thanx to renfield for reminding me) - The Three O'Clock: Girl O’ My Dreams, We Can Funk, Teacher, Teacher and Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got - Vanessa Williams: Eternity and Euphoria Highway (thanks to Wowugotit for reminding me) - Violent Femmes: Wonderful Ass
. What did I forget? . [Edited 9/28/20 14:29pm] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Wasn't "I Wanna Be Your Lover" initially offered to Patrice Rushen? And the Bangles were offered "Jealous Girl" and "Manic Monday" but obviously only took "Manic Monday".

Ha! Good one. Not sure if it should count because it's a cover though, but I'll add it A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Fancy being offered a song by Prince and turning it down! They’re all cancelled. 😂 Except James. He gets a pass. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

They’re all cancelled. 😂 Except James. He gets a pass. True, for a fan the notion is very awkward of course. As for James, Prince actually shamed him with the Gimme Your Love remix. He turned a very bland James Brown song into a killer 10mn funk jam. Clearly he and Eric put a lot of effort into that one, i think P was making a point. Oh this is a good thread. James Brown doing Chocolate would have been epic. I read somewhere that Robert Palmer did record Lust U Always so I would like to hear that. I think he would have done it justice as Simply Irresistible sounds quite similar to me.

Is it Eric on Horns and/or Candy Dulfer? The production sounds a bit 1989 partyman 12" Horns era.

Never knew of that Gimme Your Love remix, thanks! This is why the Org rocks. Learning about nuggets like this even after all these years. My password is what

Pvault doesn't even credit Eric. It's definitely him on sax but IDK about Candy. Do you think you can hear her? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

First I hear of that and I find it quite odd because the song was written specifically for Martika (she's even credited a co-author). What's your source? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Apparently Prince decided to not give it to her before she could consider it, at least that's what Pvault says, which is why I didn't include it. I've never heard of this Late Night Train album: when would it have been and what's your source? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

According to Pvault, Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 2) was recorded for Deborah Allen, but the way they write it, it's unclear if it was offered to her at all and she declined to use it or if P only offered Telepathy. I think I remember an interview of her telling the story and she only mentioned one song. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

- Didn't Miles and Prince worked together on the ''Rubberband'' album ? Were those songs you mentioned intended for that album or for ''Tutu'' ? - here : Easy Mo Bee, collaborator on 1992’s Doo-Bop “I didn’t know that Prince and Miles Davis had done some recording together until his manager at the time, Gordon Meltzer, brought up the Rubberband sessions. Matter of fact, there were two songs from the Doo Bop album, ‘High Speed Chase’ and ‘Fantasy,’ that they took from ‘the Vault.’ We had gotten six songs done, me and Miles, but then he passed away. And that’s when Gordon came to me and said, ‘Listen, we have two songs to make a complete album that we’re gonna take from the Vault.’ Now I’m not 100 percent sure, but I think that ‘High Speed Chase’ had come from those Rubberband sessions with Prince. You would never get to know that, because the horn part was given to me as an a cappella track and a new song was built around it. But there’s only one Vault, and that’s the one at Paisley Park.” - from this article : - https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1114-inside-miles-davis-prince-obsession-as-detailed-by-davis-family-and-collaborators/ - This probably passed here somewhere on the .org i'm sure. -
