The Day Shall Come

Anyone else watched The Day Shall Come, the excellent satirical comedy film by Chris Morris about the FBI funding and then arresting terrorist suspects? The use of “The Cross” at the end is incredibly powerful, surprised that the Estate authorised usage though.

The estate doesn't have to take some political stance on every occasion. In fact, it's best they don't. They're here to make money and keep the business afloat. That means allowing licensing of songs for projects. They're not here to comb over every person who wants to use a Prince song and give their seal of approval. Of course they are aware of what it's being used for, but they're smart to just charge the fee, and let someone use a song. The court ordered the estate to monetize itself, and this is a perfect example of that happening.

Also -- to quell the predictable "But Prince wouldn't want his music used in commercials...." complaints, don't forget that when Prince put his music back under NPG Publishing in 2014, he sent out a press release authorizing commercial use of his music.

The company will be responsible for ensuring Prince receives payment when his compositions are used commercially. It will license compositions, helps monitor where they are used, and collects royalties on behalf of Prince. It will also secure commissions for music and promote existing compositions to recording artists, film, television, video games etc.

The copyrights owned and administered by publishing companies are one of the most important forms of intellectual property in the music industry. Publishing companies play a central role in managing this asset, regarded as vital for artists.
