I suspect they're gong with the bigger money makers/more well known stuff for deluxe editions.

So my hunch is the next one will be Diamonds and Pearls.

There won't be a next one for WB that isn't a movie soundtrack. I kinda wish the mods would sticky something explaining a bunch of this stuff. Maybe orgers should collaborate on a "what we know" post.

There's the stickied general estate thread(s) that get into this stuff.

WB soundtrack, huh? I can't see a Batman or GB deluxe happening.

And I wouldn't worry about who owns what or what soundtrack. If there's money to be made, they'll work it out and, to my mind, D&P is next up in the queue as far as "hits and big selling albums" go. There's also a ton of vault material surrounding that record, a lot of it really good.

Fact is, plain and simple, the estate wants to sell this shit and with 1999, PR and SoTT out of the way, we're left with, what?

Lovesexy (undersold, not popular or maintstream)
GB (not great, bad movie attached)
ATWIAD (interesting is a divisive and somewhat niche album nobody brings up much)
Batman (only popular due to the movie. No one is clamoring for this)
Parade (probably the best and last one left as an artistic triumph with good outtakes but the movie drages it down and it didn't sell a ton). It has "Kiss" on it as a hit and it's the super deluxe one I'd want but these people are trying to sell shit.

BUT:

D&P (I think) is his 4th best biggest selling album.

*checks*

Nope. 5th. my bad. ATWIAD sold more so i stand corrected. But that was on the heels of PR when people were buying it sight unseen (or unheard for that matter) and no one really clamours for more of that. A lot of people were let down by it.

I'll ante up, go on record and say Diamonds and Pearls Deluxe will be next Deluxe Edition and tehn it might end, but I'd rather have a box set of nothing but vault tracks and some DVD's of live stuff like someone else mentioned.

They're about to get into "what can we give the hardcore fans" instead of "what sold the best?" as the big sellers dry up but until they do, D&P is RIGHT THERE.

There's a contradiction between the 2 parts in bold.

The Estate is a company that needs to generate income from the Prince catalogue.

Unlike record companies, that can easily ignore the back catalogue of on artist because they have an endless flow of material to release and rerelease, the Estate has only Prince's catalogue to generate income.

So unless the family one day decides to sell the catalogue to a major label (in which case we may be in trouble), they'll have to keep releasing material.

Live and vault recordings are an obvious options, but remasters are also a cheap and easy way to capitalize on nostalgia and resell what's already been sold. The package may get cheaper as in no big book, but I don't see why they'd stop the flow of SDE's: at the rate of one a year they can keep themselves busy for the next 40 years...

I don't think so.

My point was that I suspect they'll milk the big sellers first (where D&P is the main jewel remaining) and then move on to satisfying the die hards (of which there are fewer potential buyers) by releasing something like an all encompassing vault or live set(s).

Reading your post makes me actually think we're largely in agreement here unless I'm missing something. How did you think I contradicted myself?

The contradiction is that if they want to sell it then it won't end after D&P. Which I am in agreement with. We may not get SDEs of all 40 albums but I don't see this wildly successful endeavor stopping any time soon. I think it is very rational to think Batman, D&P, Parade, GB, Lovesexy, Symbol, and Gold Experience/Come could all see SDE treatment in some fashion.

Yes we agree mostly. I just suspect the SDE's or just plain remasters are an easy way to do things, because it takes less effort than excavating and curating vault collections and live shows (since they appear to not even be able to fix the speed of a live recording!!).

I mean Sony is rereleasing the whole post-WB catalogue, so it'd be a good trick to come back in 5 or 10 years and say "hey, guys, here's Planet Earth again, only this time it's a remaster with a couple of bonus cuts". Indeed, there's also the matter of all the non-album tracks (b-sides and remixes and other internet goodies for the later years) that need to be rereleased and can easily be added to a remaster. Like Planet Earth with the Internet mix of Guitar, etc.

But I may be wrong regarding their strategy, of course. What we agree on (unlike a few orgers) is that they won't stop releasing things, regardless of what it is.

I agree with Lovesexy (tracked!) and The Black Album being in the same Deluxe Remastered set. A third disc could be for B-Sides and Vault material...no need for the edits this time. Then the fourth disc would be a Lovesexy concert along with a DVD.

But honestly, I'm hoping "Parade" will be the next one...And the final Revolution concert on September 9th, 1986 in Yokohama Japan has to be included. It's epic. They can't mess that up...hopefully!

Oh, I see. Thanks

I meant that I think the SDE stuff might end - re-issuing a popular album with DVD shows and outtakes - not that the estate will stop releasing stuff entirely. A full on dedicated live set and a comprehensive vault set make sense, encompassing several years of material. But I'm not sure Lovesexy, Gold, ATWIAD, Parade, Batman, GB and Love Symbol have enough of a dedicated following to warrant the full treatment that SoTT, 1999 and PR got and I listed the reasons why.

That's all I meant. So I don't think I contrdicted myself in as much as we simply disagree on the viability of certain projects. So, yeah.

I'm sure we'll see more, of course, but remain uncertain that anything past D&P will get the level of dedication of the albums I bolded. Sure, I could be wrong, which is why I said that might end. Not that it WOULD. If it were up to me, I'd move onto a deluxe set of live material (DVD/CD/Vinyl) or a shit ton of vault songs before I tried to push SDE Parade, Lovesexy, etc.

Naturally, I'll snatch up whatever they put out but, to my eyes, D&P seems like the commercial move to make next.

One thing that occurred to me is that the SDE so far have been very tied to the podcasts. Obviously the podcasts are not the reason for the SDE, but it’s interesting how important the “story” of the album is to the people behind the releases. So I think whatever comes next needs to be a good story. That’s why I think it will be either LoveSexy/Black Album, Parade, For You, or Dirty Mind, since each of those have such involving stories behind their creations. I think a Lovesexy/Black Album would be right at the top for me. But a For You box would also be a really huge opportunity to tell Prince’s “origin story” and the packaging and marketing could reflect this.

I doubt a ton of people listened to those podcasts (as good as they were) outside of hardcore fans.

I think were about to move into the second tier of the reissues and SD editions where the estate is going have to move beyond what the general population thinks of "Prince" and more into the overall realm and general area of the hardcore fans. I'm just not sure there's as strong a market for a 7 CD Parade edition and all the other albums we have left to dig into. I could be wrong.

And I also don't have a problem with that approach. In fact, I welcome it. I've beaten 1999, PR and SoTT into the fucking ground and am far more interested in soundboard aftershows, rare (and unearthed) tracks, full concerts with great sound and really special shit like live DVD's, true rarities and such.

Guess we'll see. Meanwhile, I have a ton of SoTT SDE to digest so I'll take it.

I would hope they go HEAVY on the video content for the lovesexy set. A main show, Camden Palace aftershow, LA Soundcheck, rehearsal footage.

Absolutely. There is too much good shit that was filmed during that era to only give the Dortmund show.

can't understand people who keep wanting stuff like dortmund on a lovesexy sde, the sott movie on the sott sde, syracuse on purple rain, etc

it's like... are you kidding me? you know we're talking about the guy with mountains of video just sitting there and you want one that you've seen 1000 times already?

I really and truly don't get it

In the case of the Dortmund show, it would be nice to have it released officially. But not in lieu of all of the other gems they could include.
