Cool Love > Good Love

Rediscovering some of these songs from that era. This track is great. Its proof that by 1987-88 people just didnt want to hear Prince's brand of of Pop even with a hotty like Sheena signing it.

I am disappointed that Good Love is not on SOTT super deluxe. As well as the original tittle track to the 3 album collection.

The set is ultimately a fail when not one version of Crystal Ball is on it. When so many great tracks that were part of this era and compilations intended for iterations were not on it but some lame vault tracks and single edits were on it instead.

.

I understand that Sony and others may have had rights to some of those tracks, but that a deal couldn't be brokered for this release is amazingly disappointing.

well let's face it. we weren't ever going to get more than 3 vault discs so if that means half a disc is new shit as opposed to previously release crystal ball 98 shit, that's a net gain in my book.

But Crystal Ball is on it... it's an extremely edited version, but it's there.

You're right there is a 7" mix. That's something, but still what a shame.

This right here alone is why this collection is ultimately a disappointment. THAT wa the tittle track to this whole thing and it is a significant piece of music and they put a 7" edit? That is so disrespectful.

I find your rabid outrage amusing but, of course, you’re right. Seems perverse having a 7” inch edit when they must have the master of the original (before P tinkered with it for 97) at Iron Mountain. It’s the centrepiece of the era, a work of true art. And, yeah, Good Love should have been here. Along with quite a few more. But Christ, it’s just greed. We’ve been fed well this month.

Rabid outrage? Lol

I find that in itself amusing.

I think i have been pretty mild in my disappointment. So much so that I think i need to exit the discussion fior fear of spoiling the joy for others who might not get where i am coming from.

.

It's all good. I am not trying to manage anyone's else's expectations, just speaking for myself and I quite aware i only speak for myself and that i am probably in the minority here.

Enjoy everyone. No "rabid outrage" but as I;ve stated , just disappointment.

The edit is really what its meant to be.
The long version is more like a 12" extended mix
And one of those was already released in 98
No one needs another one.
Most prince songs are best when he self edits.
The edit is appropriately cryptic.

I'm pretty sure Good Love will be on Lovesexy. Their reasoning probably was 1988 = Lovesexy. I would disagree since it was released before anything from LS, therefore still in the SOTT era. Same with 4TTIYE which was released before ATWIAD (therefore PR era).

Agreed. The single edit loses all the power, creativity and surprise of the full length version. I'd prefer the track had not been included, rather than being butchered. It's a waste of space here, along with a handful of other songs.

I shared your frustration at first, but felt differently after considering what likely happened and coming up with an easy workaround. I wouldn't call not including the original, full-length version of "Crystal Ball" disrespectful. I imagine they had a specific budget and no shortage of options re: ways to put that money to good use. It seems disrespectful if you think of the situation as "Getting the rights vs. Not getting the rights." However, I imagine the issue was much closer to "Getting the rights vs. Using that portion of the budget to help with other important tasks, like finding and cleaning up outtakes, doing a quality remaster, any extras (like YouTube videos), making sure the presentation is nice and so on."

IMO it would be tough to justify using much of their budget on the rights to that one (great and highly relevant) song. Which is especially true since there's an easy workaround to include it in high-quality for anyone who's interested: The full-length version of Crystal Ball (from Sony) is available in HD quality on Amazon Music (probably elsewhere, too; I just happen to use Amazon Music and found/got it there). I just moved the Sony HD version from Amazon into my tracklist/playlist for this SOTT collection. Yeah, it feels like the sort of thing you shouldn't have to do with such an important and "fancy" seeming box-set-type collection. I get that. But it only takes a minute, it works just as well as if the song was included all along & if they'd actually bought the rights from Sony, it seems very likely the collection would have suffered in another important area. (The edits are just my futile efforts to create a space between paragraphs & didn't change content.)

No one here is talking about including the version that's on CB98 and getting rights and whatnot. What people wish we'd have is one of the unreleased, long alternate edits that we have on bootlegs, instead of that one.
