SOME DISRESPECTFUL AND CONDESCENDING BS

Here I thought we were having a respectul conversation. Bye now.

I'm sorry you're taking it this way but when you keep ignoring the other person's arguments and bringing the conversation to square one no matter what is said, I don't see how you can expect it to go well. We were not going anywhere, it was an endless loop and I didn't feel like doing this all night.

Now I'm not holding a grudge, I'm still cool with you. I just got fed-up. No hard feelings hug

lol lol lol

I ain't fighting. Schlomo was always cool in my book and I don't recall ever fighting with him in all these years. But today it was this typical online conversation where you go from 1 to 2 to 3 to 1 to 2 to 3 to 1 to 2 to 3 to 1 and so on forever. There's no point, I'm too old for this.

Hi all, I am of course over the moon with SoTT expanded... particularly enjoying the vault CDs and the DVD... It's an amazing labout of love, all the way down to the photos, the design, the essays.

The problem is, I can't shake the feeling that this edition is still incomplete.

I mean, how can the "audio" story of SoTT be told in the absence of the full version of Crystal Ball, Dream Factory, Movie Star...

I know the reason for their absence is the fact tha they were released by prince in 1998.

Still, the fact that there is a tangible reason for their absence doesn't get rid of this feeling that the whole set, however wonderful it is (and it IS) has a big hole as far as vault tracks go.

So I created an additional, fourth CD with the vault tracks that were released in 1998:

- Crystal Ball (full version)
- Dream Factory
- Movie Star
- Crucial (alt.)
- Last Heart
- Make Your Mama Happy
- Sexual Suicide
- Good Love
+ I added the "sisters and brothers" version of Crystal Ball at the end.

Now it feels a lot more complete smile

Curious - does anyone have an easy way to normalize the sound on these songs to match the sound levels on SOTT:SDE? I know whatever could be done would be crude adjustments, just curious.

Yeah, there is plenty of free software out there to lower raise volume (e.g. MP3Gain) and more advanced options (Audacity).

A very good practical illustration of my demonstation, BTW, would be as such: say a very famous rapper, Jay-Z or Kanye, someone who generates big money, samples and loops the beat from The Dance Electric, comes-up with a major hit, and licences the sample from WB, claiming it was sampled from PR Deluxe. What are the odds that Sony is gonna pretend nothing happened and let WB cash in? My bet is that they'd sue the rapper's ass, saying "this is our sample, not WB's", and that WB wouldn't fight it.

Well, if someone can find a way to splice/remix The Ball/Joy segue, we are good to go for a remastered Crystal Ball.

There's still the problem of Rebirth, too.

Do u find the current leak's sound quality so awful? I must admit I'm very happy with it.

The new leak is sonically as good as the remaster, better than on the CB leak? eek

SOTT SDE should have included a vault CD dedicated to originals. Specifically, the tracks given to Jill Jones and Sheila E’s 1987 releases.

The Originals concept could have worked but it'd have had to be organized differently, with a focus on the "orphan" songs Prince gave to random artists.

Regarding the side projects, common sense would actually call for the Prince versions to be part of a SDE for each album. But clearly this isn't the road they chose (for now).

On a sidenote I was baffled that WB wouldn't seize the opportunity Originals gave them to upload the two 6's albums (as well as any other of these related Paisley albums they may still own since it's unclear who owns The Family, Mazarati, Taja and Jill) on streaming platforms. Baffled!!

I'm honestly the most surprised that Eggplant with Wendy's vocals wasn't included, since the version with Prince's vocals was part of it AND they included Lisa's A Place in Heaven in addition to Prince's version. Wendy's version even seems like the more complete, final track. I can't see this popping up on another set either, unlike some other tracks potentially missing. If not here, when? I hope it's not locked up forever. Really strange. (This also goes for Sheila E.'s vocals version of Love and Sex, since the other one is on there.)

The others from SoTT era that I was suprised were missing from the SDE were

Girl O' My Dreams

Data Bank

Can't Stop This Feeling

We Can Funk

Yah, U Know (86 version)

These were recorded smack in the middle of all the other tracks on this release. Why were they missing especially since Soul Psychodelicide was included, being a similar vibe? They arguably could be part of some later Graffiti Bridge release, but they would have seem better placed here, given that they're mostly full Revolution backed tracks. I hope they get a proper release sooner rather than later.

I'm also suprised we didn't get a remastered B-side set release version of Power Fantastic. Same goes for Feel U Up along with the (Long Stroke) version. Maybe on a future Batman release?

Tracks around this mid-Revolution era that I really hope we get on a Parade or ATWIAD SDE release:

Splash

Empty Room

Neon Telephone

Go

Come Elektra Tuesday

Old Friends 4 Sale (original 85 recording both with and without orchestration)

Alexa de Paris

Heaven

Others Here With Us

Plus remastered versions of Girl, Hello, 4 the Tears in Your Eyes

Also would have liked to have had the shorter, non-12" mix of Wonderful Day with Wendy & Lisa's vocals that would have been the one to be placed on the early Dream Factory configuration. Over 7 minutes is too long for that one.

There's already too many songs not sung by Prince on this prince SDE.

I would have liked the two versions of The Sex Of It and Baby Go-Go. Those are probably slated for another Originals if ever released.

Well, "The Sex of It" was written in the middle of 1987, months after SOTT was released. So it belongs more on Lovesexy. In fact, isn't it some of the Lovesexy rehearsals that we heard him teaching the band the song? (Same with "Baby Go Go" on another boot.)

"Baby Go Go" does date to 1986, and seems like an obvious choice. It's also odd that this was sort of a one-off song in some ways. Prince hadn't recorded for days before that, and didn't again for 3 or 4 days after (where he blew out "Data Bank" and "Can't Stop" in the same session on 17Jun1986). DMSR notes it as him "dropping by Sunset Sound" and recording "Baby Go-Go" in a five-hour session. It wasn't necessarily part of any other block of time doing recording. (The Parade Tour was still happening, too).

So while it doesn't seem to have that SOTT sessions synergy, it's certainly from that period in 1986.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

the only reasonable way to handle these songs, is a box set dedicated to princes versions of songs given to other artists.

originals seems like a clumsy, messy, slightly all over the shop way of doing it.

there should be a box set just focusing on princes versions of songs given to the time, vanity 6, sheila, family, etc etc.

I did this right away. Just for the Crystal Ball tracks, which I added to the end of Disc 3 of the SDE, most of which I removed (the 4 edits replaced their older versions on Hits, and the Hot Thing stuff just got dumped).

I’m not criticising the choices made for the boxset as no one was ever going to be fully satisfied with whatever approach.

But adding the CRYSTAL BALL tracks to this set changes the experience entirely. They are a huge part of this picture (Ok, Make Your Mama Happy is forgettable). As it stands now, this is a collection of SOTT A-sides and C-sides, with the B-sides missing. Which is a pity. Going from SOTT to the CB tracks to the Vault discs is an incredible experience.

It would be nice if at some point the estate released a set of vault tracks that didn't make it only any of the Super Deluxe Editions. A mop up, so to speak. It wouldn't need a theme (like Originals). It could just be: "Songs we left off other sets because there wasn't enought room".

I realize some songs they left off intentionally and unfortunatley aren't likely to make it on to a new set (such as the original Extralovable or Lust U Always because of their lyrics... and maybe stuff from the '98 Crystal Ball because it had recieved an official release).

But I assume other songs like Data Bank and Girl of My Dreams were excluded from the SDE merely because tough choices had to be made to keep the size of the sets reasonable. I'd like a "From the Vault" set that includes stuff like that.
